Default Model 28 help

I recently acquired these model 28,s in a trade. The top is a 6 inch Mod-28 S190xxx. The gun is in great shape but the original grips were replaced with target grips. The bottom one came with its original box etc. The gun has been refinished and has a target trigger and hammer. It’s serial number is N202xxx. What would the correct grips be for the 6 inch gun? Any help is appreciated.

Most likely N frame Magna stocks with the smooth diamond at the screw location.

The grips shown below are proper for an "S" series model 28.

Glad to see this question asked. I have an S serial numbered Model 28 with target grips. I'm new here with lots to learn. Would my target grips have been added by a previous owner?

Most likely. Could have been ordered but I have only seen one or two that were.

Mine is an "N" M-28-2 that wasn't shipped until Dec 1978.
These are the Magna grips that it was wearing when shipped.

It now wears a set of Target stocks.

If you don't have the original grips at least find era correct ones.

Target grips were an option for the model 28. You could order the gun with them, and yours may have come with them from the factory. The box would tell you if you happen to have it.

The problem with answering your question is twofold. First, we don't know when this gun shipped, since you didn't provide the serial number; Second, without seeing the left hand side, we can't know what sort of relief the stocks have.

If you provide more information, we have a better chance of telling you if this particular set of stocks might have come on your gun.

Yes, the Model 28 HP could be ordered with target stocks. But different style target stocks shipped at different times, and we don't know what style the stocks pictured are.

Those sure look like goncola alves wood. Being economy guns 28s ordinarily shipped with walnut Magna Stocks. Until walnut Target Stocks disappeared altogether that was also true of Target Stocks. The one 28 that I did buy new came with walnut Target Stocks. It was ~ $250 in 1980. When the lower priced models like 17s, 14s, 15s and 28s were ordered with Target Stocks they usually got less expensive walnut. Goncola alves was standard on the more expensive 25s, 27s, 57s, and 29s. I'm not saying that those goncola alves Magna Stocks did not come on your 28. The type of wood just makes it less likely that they did.

If the photo shows 'your' 6" model 28, the stocks are not of the correct type; they would need to have the uncheckered diamond around the stock screw, and as mentioned 99+% of these had the Magna stocks from the factory.

The 3rd edition of the SCSW is great but there is a 4th.

Although not common, target stocks were available for special order for the model 28.

Thank you. They were in a zip log bag marked for this revolver so I have always figured they came on it. Maybe not.

It was brand new never fired the first time my brother let me take it rabbit hunting. I'm sure it was wearing Magnas but I can't swear that it was these.

Maybe the third time he let me take it it was wearing a set of Pachmyar grips. He said they were better suited for what I was using the gun for.

Thanks for reply. The pic is of my Model 28. The serial is S224xxx. According to the book I just bought that puts it 1961 or thereabouts. I have the box it came in with all the paperwork and cleaning stuff. With all the replies received, I can safely assume the stocks are incorrect. Perhaps one day I will be a purist, but until then I'm going for the prettiest stocks I can find for these babies. I know, I know, sacrilege, and Hell awaits me. Thanks to all for the info.

I am somewhat of a purist but there's always the exception.
This is my 1960 6.5" M-27. It was shipped with Magna grips
on March 11, 1960.

My 6.5" M-29-2 was shipped with Coke Bottle stocks so I decided that's what I wanted for this one.

A good friend found me this set of Cokes that I'd swear were brand new.

While they're not technically correct they are perfect for me and the gun.

My M-28-2 doesn't wear its factory grips but the ones it does wear are S&W Targets.

Bunch of good looking 28's here! My 1968-ish 28-2, 4", S304142, came with Hogues. It wears some form of magnas most of the time now, pictured here with Ken's Driskill's work. If any of you have a set of football target stocks, smooth or checkered, to spare, I'm interested. Target stocks fit my hands best for shooting.

Default Model 28-2, N Serial

Here is my 28-2, 6", N88057 with Magna stocks. Next week it will be joined by a 28-2, 4", N518832, my first 4" N frame. I have always gone with 6" (or better) for N frames, and 4" for K frames. I'm looking forward to picking up the 4".
