Default Model 28 with a K serial number

I have a Model 28, says Highway Patrolman on the barrel...but the Dealer's paperwork shows a serial number beginning with a K. I do not have the gun in front of me but will have it later today. I was going through paperwork and happened to notice this. Is it possible an N frame S&W has a serial number starting with a K?

Thanks,
SG47

From my limited experience, the Highway Patrolman/ model 28 will have a serial number beginning with "S" or "N" but not a "K". Most likely the seller put the wrong serial number on the paper work. Congrats on your new gun though. I used to own a very nice Model 28 4-screw until I gave it to my son. (What was I thinking?) I love the old "N" frame revolvers.

Having been a Dealer, sounds like a slip of the pen. Lets just wait for your next Post.

As you probably know, the serial number is on the butt frame. It's possible the stocks cover the s/n and someone erroneously copied some other number off the gun. Take a good set of gunsmith screwdrivers to remove the stocks if need be. Do not leave until the paperwork is corrected. If there is no serial number on the butt frame, have the dealer send it back and get a refund.

My guess is the dealer may have mistakenly
Taken an assembly number as the serial number.

I'm aware this is the case. I'm going to an estate auction This weekend and a highway patrolman is listed as well as a 3 inch 60–10. Going to try to get the 60 for my wife, and interested in the highway patrolman if I can get it at a low enough price. Possibly to resell. Or at least that's my story to my spouse. My question, I've noticed on GunBroker that highway patrolman serial number appear to be on the frame inside the yoke, too. Is this the case with this model, or not? I don't think I'll be able to remove the grips at the auction.

HP serial numbers are not located on the yoke, those are model / assembly numbers. The number on the butt frame is officially it. Some models have had serial numbers stamped on the cylinders and barrels, but it is the number on the frame that counts.

I would point out the possible serial number mistake to the Auctioneer before the auction starts. In the interest of legality, I am sure he will check it..

EDIT - I stand corrected. I got to thinking, went down and pulled my S prefix HP out of the safe, and yes, the serial number IS stamped on the yoke, below the 28-2 stamp, as well as the butt.

My HP #N324*** has the serial number over the model number in the yoke. That being said, with the small size of the stamping the N could easily be mistaken for a K.

I saw the gun and the first letter is indeed an N...I called the dealer but he says he cannot correct his mistake since he doesn't have access to a database from 2013. Interesting.

I've bought plenty of guns from dealers that I found later to have misrecorded the SN.

I never cared to correct them, as it's not my paperwork nor my responsibility.

I don't understand why anyone would care if the dealer gets their paperwork wrong.

As above, I have bought several SW revolvers where they recorded the assembly # from the yoke as the serial #. I don't see where this is a problem. Have been wrong before, though. I especially like when they record the assembly # as the model #. Sometimes leads to smokin' deals.

Regardless of what a dealer may put on a sales slip, I document the "correct" # and lot it correctly on my (C&R) books.

It can be a huge problem in some places! For example when I lived in New York it was required to have the serial number of the pistol listed on your permit and possession of pistol without the number listed on your permit was a serious offense. In some places carry guns have to be listed by serial number on your permit and those are the number only ones you are approved to carry. Having the serial number specifically correct on paperwork from a dealer is something I would insist on even now that I live in a free state with no such issues. If the gun is stolen then recovered how are you going to confirm it was yours without the correct serial number?!

I don't understand what the dealer's problem is. Why does he need a database from 2013 (or any other year)? The serial number is there on the frame of the revolver.

I would make sure the paperwork is correct before I took possession or I would nix the deal. There are other M28s out there. There are other dealers too.

Well, none of New York's laws apply in Colorado, thankfully. Serial numbers are not listed on a permit. No one knows the serial numbers of guns I own except myself, which go into a database, including where purchased, when, etc. What am I missing?

Default Most of us need to read more carefully!

The original poster did not write that his buying anything. He wrote that in 2013 a dealer used a K prefix number on paper work for his Model 28. I think we all know that can not be correct.

My habit is to verify the serial number that FFLs write on the forms that they fill out in front of me. I have caught them making innocent mistakes, the most common being using a S&W revolver's assembly number.

One risk in not correcting them is that if they also sent the wrong number to the police they could unknowingly sell you a stolen gun. You could later loose that gun while transferring it through an FFL for any reason.

All the N frames that I bought new in the 1970s and 1980s had a duplicate serial number stamp in the yoke cut out along with the model number. Generally, the assembly number was moved from that location to the left side of the gripframe when S&W started stamping model numbers there. By the early 1990s the Feds had started requiring all new guns have their serial number in two places on their frame or receiver. By the way, some post 1990 S&W revolvers have the serial number on the under side of the top strap or on the side of the frame below the cylinder window and some did not use the butt for one of the two serial number locations.
