Needs help dating a S&W revolver.
Hello all.
I´m from sweden, you have to appolugize my poor English.
I hope you understand.
I have been asked if I want to buy a S&W for 1500 sek, about 167 US-dollars.
it´s a:
.38 special
Mod 14-2
Serial number: 588XXX
Year of production?
Ok price?
Any known weaknesses to look for on this model?
All springs in the revlover are new (Wolf)
I´ll try to fix a pic of the revolver and post it.
Best regards/ CM

Welcome to the forum. A 14-2 for $167 sounds like a great deal to me. Great guns, much fun to shoot. Enjoy.

Edit: I assumed he left off the K on the sn; would make it correct for 1964 model 14-2 I think.

Welcome.
I think there's probably a letter in front of your serial number, which would help with the date. The "real" serial number is on the bottom of the grip frame.
$167.00 is an unbelievably low price in the USA. The only thing that would concern me is why the springs were changed, and the skill of the person who did the change. Spring changers are rampant here, because people feel like they're doing something, maybe? Think of all the fine little cars trashed by wannabe "tuners", and you have my opinion of change just to be cool.

You're English is fine. I would proceed with caution. Someone took the time and effort to replace the springs, then lets it go for a $167? I would thoroughly inspect it before I bought it. If it passes, it will be a good shooter.
How does the firing cone look? The gap between the cylinder and the firing cone? How much play is in the cylinder? Does the pistol have any marks on it that would indicate it had been disassembled frequently, like scratches on the ejector rod?

Hi again all.
I havent seen the gun yet, just on one Picture, the one that I add to the thread Before.
The women who sells it is a member of the same shooting club as I am. I havent even talked to the woman in person yet. I just had a question from the president of our shooting club if I want to buy it.
She is a precission shooter, and she is Selling of all her guns due to moving to an other part of the counrty and that she´s not renewing her licens. We have oue licens on a 5 year permit in Sweden. You have to renew ever licens every fifth year.
Thank you all very much for your good and Learning input.
I appreciate it a lot.
I will look at all the things you mention.

Curtis välkommen!
I clicked on the link and it brought up your Postimage Pic. Very nice revolver.
It has the wide trigger and hammer and target sight that is desirable. The target grips are for a revolver about 4 years older than that revolver.
For that price, it would sell VERY quickly in the US.
If you can shoot it, do that before buying it.
I would buy it if offered to me.

I don't see the picture, but from your description I'd buy it in a New York, well Stockholm second. It sounds like a winner. I love K-38's; I'm down to three, I think.

In this country, the stocks (grips) alone would sell for almost that much!
I tried grabbing the picture and posting it below:

Thank you for helping whit the Picture Jack
Haven´t talked to the seller yet, I´ll come back to you all whit more info as soon as I have looked at and fired the gun.
I´m wondering about the scratches on the right side of the hammer.
Anyone whit ideas how they have comed there?
How much gap between cylinder and cone, fully cocked, is acceptable in millimeters?
Regards/Curtis M

I'm late to the party as usual, but the scratches on the side of the hammer are from a slight frame rub as the hammer falls. By the way did you get to shoot it? Did you buy it?

Hello everyone.
First of all, you have to excuse me for late posting.
Now I have the revlover at home, just picked it up today.
Cylinder/cone gap is 015 mm. feels welded.
Ejector rod is completly straight
Cone looks good.
Muzzle is okay.
a Little bit og fire cutting in the top strap, but not to bad.
Over all good bluening, a few minor schratces in the barrel and a Little bit on the cylinder.
It needs a good cleaning though
The only thing is that the round nut on the side windage screw unwinds it self. I guess a Little bit of coil lock glue will fix that problem.
at this moment I have just dry fired the revolver, single action mode is very very smoth, really beatiful.
btw I go the price down to 150 usd.
I also asked the lady who sold it about the new spring.
She bought the revolver in 2014 and the springs were allready changed when she bought the revolver.
She have only fired about 20 wadcutters whit it during her ownership.
One again thank you all for supportive info and help.
If you want to see more pics I hope I can give them to you during the weekend.
Regards/ CM

Even if you had to replace all the springs it would still be a great deal.
