Identify my S&W 38 Special
Hi folks. I'm new here and am looking for some help. I recently acquired a S&W 38 special. I would like very much to get the date of manufacture and any other info I can. The gun has a 6 inch barrel and has had the factory grips replaced with some monster size grips I can't use. I have attached the pics. Sorry a couple of them are upside down. Also, I'm looking for some nice rose or cherry factory grips if anyone knows where I can find them.

Nice gun. Looks like it dates to 1954. I have no idea of who made the stocks.

The grips are terrible
I don't know who made the grips either. They're terrible for my short stubby fingers. When I grip the gun properly my index finger won't even reach the trigger. That's why I'm looking around for some other grips.

If you're looking for something inexpensive that works, try Altamont.
Their target grips are HUGE but the magna/service grips are just right.

Made in 1954. It has five frame screws and is not a Model 14. It is a K-38 Masterpiece. It became the Model 14 in 1958. But no Model 14 was ever a 5 screw gun.

How's this for an absolute: "there were no .357 Magnum revolvers before the 1930s." Or, "there were no S&W hand ejectors before the 1890s." Some things can be declared "absolutes."

Yep. Lincoln was absolutely NOT shot with a Glock. For instance.

10K4xxx
10K001 – 24K9,999......1977 (manufacture)
K 217823 would have been manufactured (and probably shipped) in 1954. It's a K-frame. Look on eBay to find a pair of grips you like.
