Question: To Bob or not Bob a competition 14-4
I bought my 14-4 solely for competition. ICORE is almost always double action only shooting. I did not mind bobbing the hammer on my much used and abused 13-3. With a 3in barrel, That gun just needs a bobbed hammer to look right. And it carries great this way.
I'm leaving my 19-2 2.5 inch alone. Too nice of a gun to mess with. P&R guns with 99% blue need to be left alone!
But for pure competition, everyone seems to have bobbed hammers and the double action only mod.
What say you Smith and Wesson users? Remember, this is a $400 gun that I'm going to shoot the blue off of over the next few years. (10,000 rounds before October, more than likely)
Bob it or leave it?

Just my opinion, but what do you gain by bobbing the hammer?
Myself, I usually bob for a carry gun, because it removes the snag possibility (and may reduce cover garment wear), but I no longer remove the SA cocking notch, because I know I'm not going to cock it and I just don't care about what others think. At present, I have one or a couple or a few revolvers with bobbed hammer and SA notch, and many more with no notch. I can't remember which is which, because I don't care. This is all by way of establishing myself as someone who LIKES bobbed hammers.
But why even bother? What does it gain you? I wouldn't spend $30 to have it done, or spend 30 to 45 minutes to do it myself.
I am 72 years old, NOT actually grumpy, but not overly influenced by prevailing style.

If it was me, I wouldn't touch the wide target hammer. I'd buy another hammer and bob it.

If it were me I would not bob it unless I got some benefit from doing it.

For what it is worth I have an old Pre-Model 14 PPC revolver. The hammer has been bobbed and of course I only shoot it double action, It will shoot rings around most revolvers. http://smith-wessonforum.com/138840409-post4.html

It was bobbed probably 40 or so years before I got it. I do not believe that PPC shooting is target shooting. I believe it is more like IPSC style shooting. Speed is part of the name of the game.

I agree not to Bob the original hammer. I'm not familiar with ICORE but if it involves quick draw then maybe. Also lower hammer weight might reduce lock time so then its a benefit. But I would find a replacement hammer to Bob.
But what do I know, I bobbed the hammer on my model 65 before I picked it up in 1992!

Lock time probably has something to do with it being bobbed. Like I wrote in my previous post "Speed is part of the name of the game"

Buy another hammer and bob it. Make it easier resell and it is the right thing to do.

How can bobbing a hammer make a gun shoot better? If intended for carry, I can see it. Only my .02 worth. Besides that, 14's just look good as is. Bob

It is a question of speed of lock time for some guns. Usually you see it on a comp gun. For a carry gun the proper term would be "dehorn", this is so the hammer will not catch on anything while drawing the gun.

You asked....Me , I would leave it alone.
Then I would have a qualified gunsmith , around here Clark Custom Guns is my pick, do a Target Action Trigger Job (worth every penny).
I like the option of single action fire and who knows you might get into NRA Bullseye shooting and want the SA function.

Today I shot my first ICORE match with the 14-4. Gun performed flawlessly, me, not so much.
I don't think I will bob the hammer. The club has no rules against shooting single action, and there was one point on the swinging steel where it was a really helpful to have to option. A few of the experienced shooters were shooting it single action.
I got lucky and was able to hit them all in double action before the swing got to fast.
Great gun, no issues, so I will leave it alone.

PPC is a great sport. Still popular today in the Police Championships held yearly in Albuquerque. However, PPC is definitely target shooting, group size is everything.
That said I would bob the hammer.
