Correct Stocks for 27-2?
I have recently acquired a very nice nickle, 6 inch 27-2, SN N444XXX which indicates 1976-1977 production. It came with a set of S&W Target stocks with the "Speed Loader" cut out. All Pics I have seen show 27-2s sporting Target stocks with the "Foot Ball" cut out. Can someone please tell me which stock version is correct for this vintage? Thanks to all who respond.

The speed loader cut Targets weren't introduced until the early 80s, so they're incorrect for your gun if manufactured in the mid to late 70s.
You should be able to find the correct grips on some of the auction sites.

Here is a picture of the correct grips for your gun.
To be VERY specific, your grips should have "silver" washers on the back side. Dark washers were early style from just after they stopped with the diamonds.
Perfect new take offs like this are bringing as much as $150.00 these days. Less perfect examples from someone in a hurry to sell them might let them go for $100.00
The ones pictured are NOT for sale
Good hunting

Yep, football targets or Magna stocks would be correct for your period 27-2. I just sold a pair of early 80's football targets here last month that originally came off a 29-3 I bought in the early 80's. Since I don't have that 29 any more I didn't need the stocks and converted them into range fodder (ammo).

Great info, rgm36. I just got a mint 27-2 with the "football targets" from my best friend's estate (he left it to me!). These target grips are different from those on my 25-5, 66-1 and 686.

S&W standardized the Model 27-2 in 1975 to have Target hammer, trigger and stocks and to be packaged with the wood presentation case. Before that, a Model 27 could have been shipped with any, all or none of the Target stuff.

Personally, if a gun is not collector grade, would not worry about having the wrong era stocks. That is just me. My 28 no dash, (1960) did have Herrett Stocks on it. They felt great to me. Finally put diamond targets on it that were in the grip cabinet. Bob
