I am trying to value my Firearms to list current values for my wife. I want her to use these values as an estimate should I pass and if she needs to sell them. Of course I know something is only worth what a buyer will pay but I am only looking for a guide. The one in question today is a blued Model 29-2 with a serial number that puts it late 1966 to early 1967. It has a 4" barrel and smooth target grips. The finish is about 95%. Mechanically it is perfect. I do not have the box for it. Any ideas?
One good place to look is on Gunbroker.com. Look for S&W 29-2 with similar configuration and condition. Look for the sold guns and that should give you a good number to value yours at.
For an accurate current value, Lynn has the correct method.
For a wild-eyed guess, subject to the whims and personal biases of the Forum, you've come to the right place . Photos would be a great help, as the difference between 95 and 97% may be a few hundred dollars, but I'd guess $800 as you describe it.
A picture would really help. If it's a 4" S serial number gun that happens to have some of those special diamond target grips on it I think it would be snapped up quick at $800.
It would have been made right at the end of the Special Target Stock era, but likely shipped with standard Target stocks, possibly the smooth ones mentioned.
