Default Two Smith And Wesson Revolvers

I have two S&W Revolvers:

#1) 38 Special Model MOD. 10-5 (Flat wood grip)
6" Barrel and six shot
Blued
Serial #D9527**
23703 and R18 stamped on Swing Out Bar of Cylinder
Beuatiful Condition.


I am hoping to find out any production data/date etc. if possible.

#2) 357 Model 686-3 Flat Wood Grip
6" Barrel and six shot
Serial # BPF79** Stamped on Swing Out Bar of Cylinder
along with 073 and MOD. 686-3
Stainless Steel Again Fortunately Beautiful condition

I am hoping to find out production data date/month/year if possible.

686-3 came out in 1988

10-5 came out in early 60s

That serial number points to 1977. That would be near the end of the Model 10-5 production, since the 10-7 replaced it that year.

Those numbers are related to the assembly process and don't have much useful meaning at this point.


On the Model 686-3, BPF79** points to 1993, according to the Standard Catalog 4th Edition.

If you have the original box for the 686, we can tell you exactly when it was produced.
