Default Are either of these worth the price?

LGS has a S&W 10-5 and 64-5 for sale for $399. There is some finish wear and surface rust in places on the 10-5. The 64-5 is a heavy barrel police trade-in. Both are sa/da revolvers and mechanically are good. The 64-5 is in good shape. Are either worth the price?

4" 10-5.................. round butt.... I'd grab even with the pencil barrel...... I prefer a 3" heavy barrel.

IIRC a round butt on a nice Model 10.............. per SCS&W............... is a 20% bump in value..............................

That RB 4" model 10 is probably a decent buy and I bet you never run across another one. Is the blue as perfect as it looks in photos?

Fair prices on both, but I also like nice round...OK, that is going to get me an infraction, so I will stop . Good luck on your decision.

Yes, either gun is a good deal at about $400. But it couldn't hurt to see if how firm the price is with a little small talk to feel the dealer out.

The blueing is far from perfect on the 10, plus it has some scattered surface rust so I'm sure the blue under it is shot

I was wondering if that was a re-blue, perhaps not any too expertly done. But still, that is a shooter price these days. So if it is mechanically excellent, the price is not bad. You could always hold out for one in better condition, but it may not have a round butt.

Ok. So I'm new to revolvers. I've had a few in the past but got rid of them. Never had much love for them until recently. What's the big deal with the round butt? If I got the 10-5 I'd have to change the grips as it's just too small in my hand. The 64-5 actually fit my hand much better. If the 10-5 is a better deal then I may pick it up but I'd have to store the grips away and get something that fits better.

Try adding a Tyler T Grip first, that works for a lot of folks, including me.

I think those are excellent prices.

Best Regards, Les

As much as I prefer a blued gun with wood grips, the surface rust, etc would kill it for me.I'd go for the other one, even though I give the 10 a few bonus points for the RB.
I don't consider either one to be a steal.Full, but not unreasonable retail in my opinion.

A very good condition S&W revolver with a hammer mounted firing pin is:
pre MIM/
pre IL/
pre 2 piece barrel

buy it

That 64 might just be a round butt under the Uncle Mike grips. Somewhere in the mid 90's "SB features deleted." Living in the swamp, SS is always my preference. Joe

IT sounds like it might pay to see what he would take for both if you take one home and put the other into layaway. I really kind of like the heavy barrel and the 10-5.

S&W guys get excited about round-butt 4" post-war versions of the M&P/Model 10 because there simply aren't that many that were made, and so you don't come across one very often.

There is nothing special about them; I don't like them either, and if you don't, and the gun isn't a screaming deal otherwise, which this gun is not, pass it up. I would.

You may want to go back & take another look at that 10-5. They're uncommon; the only other one that I've run across in my little rut was stamped "U.S.". Based on its sn, probably 1969 vintage and destined for Vietnam but apparently never made it.

I paid a bit more for mine than what they're asking for yours around 10 years ago. Probably overpaid at the time, but I was glad to get it. I recently gave it to one of my kids (along with an ElPaso shoulder holster) upon his promotion to E7. -S2

I just bought a 64-5 last week for $350 otd in similar condition to the one you are looking at. I think you have some negotiable wiggle room on that price. By the way, I really enjoy shooting my 64.

That 10-5 would make a fine CC revolver. Put a Tyler T Grip on it and you will most likely find that it fits you. $400 is probably fair for the 10-5.
Police trade 64s go for less here. VA DOC has been trading batches of them in for Glock 23s and they are currently selling for $299 here at Town Police Supply. Like many here, I like round butts as well.....

4", 10-5, round butt, tapered barrel, very un common, they are not seen that often. I would have already bought it. If you do buy it and change the grips, do not lose the ones that came with it if they are serial numbered to the gun.

I was just going to say bundle them!

I have found I can do better when I do that, and then lay cold, hard cash down.

But I would start at $650, which I think is a fair price for both.

I don't believe you ever mentioned what the primary purpose of either handgun will be. If you plan to carry it concealed, then the Model 10 may be a better bet for you. Personally, I like a heavy barrel configuration. If you do decide on the Model 64, I'd ask them (the seller) to remove the grips for your inspection. Look for rust, if there, unless it's really bad, it won't be a problem, but you can use that to negotiate a better price. The price you quote in my opinion is a bit high, but still in the ballpark. Personally, assuming they check out okay, I'd offer $300.00 OTD and hope to get it at $325.00.

Good luck,

Dave

I think I'd go after the 64, I like the HB's better. I'd see if I could get it for 350-375.

I was going to say $700 for both. Always haggle.

The 10 is more than fair. 64 police trade-ins used to be cheaper, but you see less and less each day. I bet you could find one for 3-350 if you looked around, but it may take a while and who knows about condition. $400 is probably fair.

Can't put my finger on why but the Model 10 looks refinished to me. I would go for the Model 64 at those prices.

Get the Model 10-5 RB.
Find a set of these stocks for it.
Or, get a Tyler T-grip.

You take the grips off of the 64-5 and I think you're going to find the same round butt frame that the 10-5 has. No worries, there are plenty of round to square conversion grips being made now.

I'm in the buy them both camp at about 600 bucks for the pair.

For me .... the round butt makes the model 10.
The 64 is a no-brainer.
Like others have said, I'd try hard to get both.

Hell, I'm curious to see how it turns out. I'm going back Monday or Tuesday and see if I can work something out.

Well, they are mine. Not for the price I wanted but had to do it. I put them on layaway for now. Sigh. Now I have to buy a bullet mold and brass and dies

No fever. Unless I come across a steal of a deal there are only a few more revolvers I want.

The way these guys are salivating over that RB Model 10, I don't think you will lose money if you ultimately want to sell it. The Model 6-54 with the heavy barrel is about as solid a .38 revolver as you will find.
