Model 19-4 nickel 2.5in P&R value
Hello all. I picked up a piece of Virginia history today a service pistol by one of norfolk finest. Ive been wholeheartedly in to all firearms since 21 im 27 now so i dont know as much as some of the seasoned people on here. She's in I would say about 85-75% few scratches an hammer has turned almost blue.I've been doing some looking around online and these things run the gambit for pricing I'm also having a hard time dating it I know it's somewhere between 1977 in 1982 I believe I'm not really looking to sell it I possibly might for the right price but would like to know more about my firearm. I have a general idea what i think its worth but im sure its value is more then i paid for it. thank you in advance.

All the 78K serial numbers were issued in 1980. So there is your manufacture date. Shipping could have been slightly later.
Looks like a good shooter. The snubby Model 19s are popular.

Other than the grips the revolver appears to be in very nice condition. I'd bet a good detailed cleaning, followed by a gentle polish with Flitz topped off with a THIN coat of wax would work wonders on that guy. Nice Score. Once cleaned up, I'm thinking that is a $550.00 - $600.00 revolver. With a really nice set of magna grips add $50.00 + $$

WELCOME TO THE FORUM. IT LOOKED LIKE A VERY NICE GUN ON THE FIRST SIDE THAT YOU SHOWED. THE SECOND SIDE---NOT SO MUCH.....
SOME POLISHING WITH A MILD ABRASIVE, LIKE MOTHERS MAG WHEEL, OR THEIR ALUMINUM POLISH, MIGHT REMOVE SOME OF THE LIGHT SCRATCHES ON THE SECOND SIDE. IN ANY EVENT, IT WILL PROBABLY LOOK BETTER THAN IT DOES NOW.....
I WOULD TRY AN ULTRA- FINE POINT, PERMANENT SHARPIE MARKER, IN BROWN, TO TRY TO BLEND IN THE SCRATCHES ON THE GRIP. TEST IT ON PAPER, TO SEE HOW CLOSE THE COLOR IS. TRY WIPING IT, IMMEDIATELY, WITH A Q-TIP, IF YOU THINK IT WILL BE TOO DARK......

I WOULD BE INCLINED TO JUST KEEP THIS OL' VETERAN, ONCE I HAD IT CLEANED UP, AND SHOOT THE SNOT OUT OF IT. IT WOULD MAKE A GREAT SD / HD PIECE WITH SOME PREMIUM AMMO. THERE WOULD BE NO NEED TO CONCERN YOURSELF WITH HOLSTER WEAR, OR ANY ACCIDENTAL HARD KNOCKS......
AS FOR SELLING IT, IT IS WORTH EXACTLY WHATEVER THE HIGHEST BIDDER IS WILLING TO PAY, JUST LIKE ANY OTHER ITEM IN A FREE MARKET PLACE. JUST ECONOMICS 101.......
OLD POLICE DEPARTMENT SERVICE PISTOLS, IF SO MARKED, HAVE A FOLLOWING. THIS ONE HAS THE ADDED ATTRACTION OF BEING AN UNCOMMON NICKEL MODEL. ONCE ITS CLEANED UP, THE ROCK BOTTOM BID, THAT I WOULD ACCEPT, WOULD BE $450.00---UNLESS I REALLY NEEDED THE MONEY.......
THERE IS ONE LIKE YOURS, CURRENTLY ON GUN BROKER, IN "NEAR MINT" CONDITION. IT IS NOT AN EX POLICE DEPT. WEAPON. THE BIDDING STARTS @ $1,000........

Welcome to the forum. Nice nickel 19 you have. I'm a fellow enthusiast of the K-frame snubs. I have a near mint nickel 19-4 in the box with all the goodies I acquired last year. Simply beautiful. As for your statement about the hammer almost turning blue, that looks correct to me. It's actually referred to as "case colored." Both the hammer and trigger have this done to them from the factory. Some hammers have quite exquisite case colors with brilliant colors. I have a few that are quite striking. S&W 66's have "flash chromed" hammers and triggers from the factory.
As for a value on you 19, condition, completeness, and location are everything. Around here, I'd estimate that'd go for around $550-$650 depending on if someone really wanted it.

Those left side scratches, may have been inflicted, by a rivet, in a holster.
If it came with one, inspect it closely.

I SUSPECT THAT A RIVET MAY VERY WELL BE THE CULPRIT. IT MAY HAVE FASTENED THE THUMB STRAP. AS SUCH, THE SCRATCHES, ALTHOUGH PLENTIFUL, ARE PROBABLY NOT DEEP. A POLISHING WITH A MILD ABRASIVE, WILL PROBABLY ERASE THE BULK OF THEM...

357BG you got a great deal on that M19 snub. I saw it listed on the local boards and almost put my name in the hat but my wife would have killed me..lol. I think you could easily get $150 more then what you payed for it. Maybe more with a good cleaning. Just remember they ain't making them anymore. You will kick yourself when you get older for selling it. Ask me how I know.

Your hammer appearing Blue is correct. It is a case hardened finish on the hammer and same on the trigger.
If you want to try to and clean that nickel finish try this:
- get Mothers Mag Wheel Polish
- get a shammy, or a clean t-shirt
- apply the polish in a circular motion one spot at a time on the gun
- rub it until the shammy or shirt turns black
- then use another spot on the whammy or shirt, don't polish with a black spot
- take your time, this will take a while
- take Renaissance Wax, and apply it to the gun after all of the Polish is wiped off.
- use a clean shammy or shirt to wipe the Renaissance wax
I did that to this model 27-2 that I used to have. It looked better than new when I was done.
