Default Hammer for model 32

I would like to buy a hammer to bob for my model 32. Do I need to look for a certain j frame hammer or will any of them do?

The early forged exposed hammers are dimensionally the same.....with the exception of the receiving end of the mainspring stirrup....the difference is how the stirrup fits into the back of the hammer. The "pitchfork" style stirrup end sits on a pin inside the hammer, while the ball end is held in a cavity in the hammer. (The newer models have a "lollipop" end on the strut) The hammer you need depends on which mainspring stirrup you have in your gun.

Also, keep in mind the new/used replacement hammer will have to be fit to the gun. These are not "drop in" parts.

Examples of three of the various styles.......

Well that's sucks. I thought it would be drop in.

Many have had success and avoided the potential fitting problem with the sear by just moving the existing DA sear to the new hammer.

Usually, if you swap the double action sear between the hammers, the new one will fit OK.

I've had hammers out before, but what is a double action sear?

My gun was made between 70-72. Will this fit or will I have to take mine apart to see?

The DA sear is pinned into the front of the hammer and is spring loaded. It fits into the hammer in a slot. If you look at your revolver with the side plate off, as you squeeze the trigger, the sear on the trigger pushes against the DA sear and causes the hammer to rise.
