Does the "R" have any significance in the serial number?
Thank You for your help.

Jim:
The way that I seem to remember it, as a result of the gun control law of 1968, manufacturers were required to be much more specific in their serial numbering schemes, and at that time Smith and Wesson changed quite a few different models serial sequences. In this case, the Model 60 had been numbered with a plain numerical serial, so they then added the R to make a unique combination, and then started at number "1".
I'm sure that someone else may be more knowledgeable than I about this change.
Please keep those original stocks. If you have the original box and papers and tools, they will add value to your gun.
