Default S&W Model 29 P&R 44Mag marked 28-2?

Seen a Different S&W 29 on Gunbroker today.#632462845
Its a Model 29 44mag P&R 6in Nickel.Not mine.
It is Marked 28-2 with serial on Frame.
Serial is the same on the butt.
Barrel is marked 44 Magnum.
Did they use S&W 28 .357 N Frames to make up some
N Frame 44mags?Looks original.
Is it a 28-2 in 44mag?or a 29 with a bad stamp?
Any collector value

Is there a serial number behind the ejector star? My bet is a barrel and cylinder change...

Just a mis-stamped gun, seems they did that on a regular basis. No collector value as discussed here in the past.

I just bought an N frame marked as a 25-2 but is a 44 magnum. Seller advertised it as a converted mod 25 with a 3 in barrel. In 1980 when this gun was built I think they were not putting 3 in barrels on model 29's so I feel this is truly a converted model 25. Can't wait to see how it shoots. The one you asked about could very well be a converted gun.

Welcome to the Forum.

Is the topstrap grooved or sandblasted? M28s were smooth on top and sandblasted.

I was going to lean towards a mis-stamp but then I looked at the photos on GB. Looks like a converted M28. It has a standard trigger and in the image of the trigger guard it looks like a matte finish as found on a 28. Also, a noticeable sideplate line due to buffing for the refinish. Does not look like it started life as a M29.

This is a sweet revolver.

Do you shout mostly specials through it, or do you go with Magnums?

I'd love to have one like this. Whoever converted this did a great job.

Well I just got it yesterday so have yet to shoot it. But my plan is to shoot mostly specials in it. It is hard to tell from the poor pictures but it is in really nice shape. And I think whoever did the conversion did a good job.

I was watching that auction and you got a heck of a deal on a very cool revolver. Glad it came to Alabama!
