Default newbie with question

ok, got a Smith in trade at a gun show, my very first one, little rough around the edges seems it was stored in a holster and it got damp. gun cleaned up good and I have shot it with light loads, under 700 fps as I was advised to do..my question is what do I have??
serial No. C329xxx
5 screw
4" barrel
fixed sights
38 special

any help much appreciated I have been told pre model 10 pre model 14 so I am a little confused here.

Welcome to the Forum! It is (if I am correct) a M&P (Military & Police) Pre 10. Based on your description it is not a pre 14. Most 14's had a 6" barrel & adjustable sights. I had a M&P from 1919. I shot standard velocity loads in it all the time, and never worried. I do not have the book of numbers for your ship date. Bob

Bear 76:

Welcome to the Forum.

Photos of your revolver would help considerably in answering your questions.

Regards,

Dave

You have a standard pre-Model 10 M&P model from almost certainly 1955. This was becoming the most popular standard police revolver at that time, and from your description that may well be what it once was. Nothing uncommon at all, but a classic. Light loads are always a good idea on an older gun where you don't know what it's been through, but there is no particular reason to be gentle with this one.
