S&W 10-5 4-inch Round Butt Pencil barrel
Came across this on a local board. Seller says it's 95%, grips numbered to gun, original box. He's asking $500. Sounds high, but what do I know?

I'd say the price is not totally out of line, especially with matching box. I prefer the heavy barrel square butt models..but that's just a personal preference..the 10s are just that..a 10.

It looks like a very nice example of a relatively common gun. I agree, it sounds high to me too. I do like the tapered barrel Model 10s but I wouldn't be interested until the seller was around the $400 range.

I agree that it sounds a bit high and would try to talk them down a bit.
I'd walk in with four, nice and crisp, hundred dollar bills, and start from there.
But I have to say, that if it checked out in person, I might just bite, even if they wouldn't come down.

The quality of that gun isnt getting any cheaper, and the taper barrel balances better for me, esp with an RB grip

Pushing the upper limit but not a bad price given original stocks and box. Sure is a nice looking Model 10.

I have run across more SB 4" 10-5s than RB, which is unfortunate, because I prefer the RB. I even RB'd an SB, and did a pretty nice job.
$400 sounds closer to right than $500, but IMO, a fair price might be somewhere in between, especially with box.
I will admit that I have been spoiled - for the last twenty years or so, I have bought used guns almost solely from my LGS, who permits me to testfire them before purchase. This is worth a LOT when buying a fixed-sight gun. And his prices are reasonable to start with.

The price would be at the high end, although not out of line given condition and box, if it were a standard square butt version, but for a certain sub-set of K-frame enthusiasts, the round butt on a four-inch barrel adds a significant premium. Hard to judge from one photo, but if the gun checks out as presented, the guy will get his 500 eventually, or certainly would if he put it up on a national auction site. Unless he gets blinded by 100-dollar bills first .

He's talking about putting it up on GB.

For a 4" round butt Model 10-5 with the correct box and in 95% condition, I don't think $500 is out of line at all. We see 4" SB Model 10-5 revolvers selling for $400 with no box or accessories.
I would personally pay $500 for that one without much hesitation, simply because nice 4" RBs don't come along every day. The owner will easily get that price on GB, in my opinion.

$500 aint bad for that package. RBs are not commonly seen.
For a dealer, not much left on the bone. Do you have the Sn.?

I'd buy it. I really like the round butt with the 4" barrel. They just aren't that common, and I'm a big fan of fixed sight service revolvers. The price isn't bad with the box.

D is 1968 or later. Beyond that you need to know at least how many digits.

Like as been said, M10-5, 4" tapered barrel, round butts are not that common, add the condition and the box, $500 is not that bad. I would not be surprised if it went higher if he puts it on GunBroker.

It sure is a nice example. I saw it too and thought getting in touch with the seller. Came here to do a little digging on it and saw this post. Good luck on the purchase.

Back when I joined NYPD, I noticed the old timers with their S&W model 10s with the pencil barrels. I think they were all square butts, as everything else revolver wise NYPD issued. I liked my heavy barrel model 10 better back than, but those old ones did have character. It was a given if you had a pencil barrel anything you were a dinosaur, and that was 1986.

Oh as far as value, if you want it and like it, you won't get hurt too bad at $500, especially with the box.

I'd buy it. I traded a .25 Seecamp with one mag and no box for a 1953 M&P set up the same way with round butt diamonds.....Love it! It's one of my house guns now.

FYI
SCS&W 4th Ed. puts a $50-100 premium on 'higher condition" model 10s with round butts...................ANIB $500 and Exc. is $400.

I have a 10-5 and a pre-war M&P in RB. Outfitted with grip adapters, they are very comfortable to shoot and accurate, as are all of the breed. I believe I paid $500 for one and $550 for the other. A little high, perhaps, but now, a couple years later, I can't seem to remember the price and I enjoy shooting them. That is worth fifty or a hundred bucks to me. Maybe you will find the same.

It is hard to find a S&W 10 in my area for under $400.00, and it would likely be a 4" HB in average condition. The round butt in my photo was my woods gun until I bought a S&W 25-5.
