The 6" model 27-2
Just want some opinions on why it seems the 6" model 27-2 value hasn't taken off. They can still be had in blue or nickel for I feel very reasonable prices. Usually under $900 if you do your shopping. I've seen nice ones for less than $800. I know the 4" and 3 1/2" versions have done well, and I've owned several 4". Is it just the barrel length that is hampering the 6"?

They seem to be the most common. Most folks want the 3 1/2" or the 5".

Yes, and of course there's also a 6-1/2" barrel available till '67, when the 6" replaced it. As a result, most of the 6"-ers are gonna be '70s guns, and '70s guns just don't seem to be viewed as favorably by the market (particularly mid/late 70s). While I find some fine mechanics in '70s guns, the bluing quality/consistency would seem to have headed south.
I could add that at least on auction there's always more 6" guns available than any of the others, as well.

I preferred the 5 inch over the 6 inch because they balanced better and at one time I had one 5 inch in nickel and one blued. The one with a 6.5 inch barrel was hard to find and I never acquired one. I sold them all off and my only N frame is a Model 28-2 with 4 inch barrel and S serial number.

The 6" Model 27 had to compete against the cheaper 6" Model 28 which was likely a much better seller.
In reality it also had to compete against the 6" Model 19, Model 66, Model 586 and Model 686.
How often do you see a 3.5" or 5" version of those other models pop up for sale.
6" is a bit long on the hip compared to the 4" where the 5" is a compromise between the 4" and 6" but was not a regular cataloged item in the other S&W .357 models.
4" Model 28's are very common where the 4" Model 27 only appears towards the end of the 27 heyday as a regular item.

gutterman, I've been looking on GB recently for a 6" gun because I need one to finish off my 27 collection of the common barrel lengths and for a fine condition 6" the price seems to just start at $900-1000 lately. Since I am partial to nickel guns anyways and that restricts me even more, but I also wouldn't turn my nose up a fine condition blue 27-2. Locally where I live, fine condition 27s are extremely few and far between, so I am pretty much limited to the auction sites for my 6" 27 shopping.
I will admit that I am a bit picky and want one in almost new condition though, so I accept the fact that I will be buying on the high end of the price range anyways.
