Three 4" Model 64s at LGS
Visited a LGS I only get to once in a while, do it just to see what they have (usually a pretty large inventory). Way over in the corner of the cabinet where they were hard to see were three nice 4" Model 64s. Two of them were DAO with what looked like may have been factory mods? Very smooth action on the one I tried. Showed some minor use, not bad.
Story was that they were from the CA Prison system. Has anyone heard about anything like these showing up in other places?
Seemed to be $375 for each. I am tempted.

Lots of LE turn in 10's and 64's that have hit the market in the last few years. Evaluate like you would any used gun. I have a police turn in 64 that is a very nice gun, shoots well and has a good trigger.

...$375 each...I would have probably taken all three home for that price....
Would have shot the three of them, picked the one I liked best and then sold the other two...you could probably make enough to keep the one for free...

There have been quite a few ex-CDC (CA Department of Corrections) and CYA (Youth Authority) model 10s and 64s on the market in the past few years. Most of the ones I've seen appeared moderately carried but not shot much and were traditional SA/DA. The DAO ones you saw may have been intended for the NYPD (NY-1 stamped?) or a similar LE contract.

I picked up a nice 64 a month ago. It was a police turn in. It has seen some wear but I'm thinking of having it glass bead blasted. Either way, it shoots great.

If I was not "rendering unto Caesar" so much this month I would have done that.

I am not sure where they are coming from but there has been several listed on auction sites lately as well.
I know the California Dept of Corrections 2" Model 64 I have has CDC engraved on it just below the cylinder. I believe all of their trade ins had that done and the Youth Authority had CYA on them.
I have a DAO 4 inch and 2 inch that came from Brinks Security Company that have no markings on them.
Many of the ones I have seen lately have re-import stamps on them. I just ordered a DAO from a place in Kentucky and it did not appear to have the re-import stamp on it and they didn't say where they came from. I imagine they picked them up from a distributor. They also had several regular 64's with the re-import stamps on them.
Not much help but the prices are right!

I obtained a model 64, 4" heavy barrel , stamped B.R.P.D. after local dept. moved up to 357 magnum. It has not been converted to DAA.
Had beat up factory grips, (from hitting car door frame), carried a lot - shot very little. Its now my favorite and most shot handgun. Very accurate . $250.00 in 1983....$375.00 today YES , if it's in decent shape, go for it , they are nice shooters. I would get the unconverted one, I target shoot and the SA pull is sweet.

I had a new model 64, and carried it on security jobs. I wish I had never sold it, but it was not DA only. I would never have such a revolver.

I'd lay down nine $100 bills, with a tenth in my pocket.
Bet that would work! ;-)

Do DOA modifications such as these usually have the full cock notch removed?

If factory work, yes - no spur or serrations on the hammer to cock it, or catch it from falling if it slips while decocking it.
By the way, D.O.A. is the name of a famous movie, or a terminal condition .

I have a 3" RB Mod 64-3 from the CYA. Looks like it was never shot OR carried. It is one of my very favorite revolvers. I also have a 4" DAO NY-1 64-5, a 4" DA/SA 64-3, and a 2" 64-2. They are all tack drivers.
Careful, 64's are apparently very addictive.

I had a factory 64 DAO.
No full-cock notch.
I converted it to SA/DA.
Do not assume that any old SA/DA hammer will be a drop-in job.
I ran into quite a few snags, and lots of fine-work to get mine operationg with the replacement hammer.
If I had it to do over again, I'm not sure the result was worth the time spent.
I never fell in love with that gun, so ended up selling it.
This is my account of the process:
want to convert DAO Model 64-5 to single/double action
.

Hello. My name is Frosty and I am a S&W-holic.
(all): Hello Frosty.
Well, thanks to the &*^$$%#) enablers on this forum I have fallen off the wagon. That store now has one less Model 64. I chose the DAO Model 64-5, partly because of the DAO trigger pull (nice.....) and the hammer-mounted firing pin. $398 + change out the door.
Pictures shortly.

I was a Sgt. in the CA Dept of Corrections and was the Armory Sergeant at a prison and the Academy. The Model 64 is a great revolver, those we used for training had almost all +P put through them. We rotated them each day but you can imagine how many rounds went through them at the Academy. We experienced a few cracked forcing cones but Smith took care of them. We had a good maintenance program and changed internal parts as needed, a hammer nose once in a while and corrected end shake as needed. All in all, the 64s held up extremely well. The average shooter will never put as many rounds through his or her revolvers as we did in a training environment.

As promised, here are some pics. DAO trigger pull is very smooth.
And, this revolver either got the absolute best cleaning job ever (I could not find hardly any evidence of gun powder residue, a patch run through the barrel came out with a very light smear) or....well the "other" is almost unthinkable. However the grips (poor imitations of Pachmayr finger groove grips) looked dirty and had some dirt/dust underneath. Not sure what to think.

IBD. I thought the 4" 64's were all square butt. Learn something here every day. Another one to keep an eye out for.

Surprised me too. According to "the BOOK", both the Model 10 and the 64 dropped the square butt configuration about 1995-6.
