You should never dry fire any S&W rimfire.

There is a stop, which combined with the counterbore on the chamber, which prevents the firing pin from impacting the edge of the charge hole. I always dry fired my Model 18, and never had any issues. In addition, the paper instruction sheet that came with the K22 and the 22 Combat Masterpiece recommended that the owner "practice dry shooting with empty gun," or language to that effect.

NO, you shouldn't dry fire a rimfire revolver. See the attached, directly from the S&W web site.

From S&W FAQ page: (model 18 is essentially a short-barrel model 17)

Can I dry fire my S&W handgun?
Q: Can I dry fire my Smith & Wesson?

A: Yes, except for the .22 caliber pistols which includes models 22A, 22S, 422, 2206, 2214, 2213 and 41.

.22 caliber revolvers such as models 17, 43, 63, 317 and 617 also should not be dry fired.

Q: Why can't I dry fire my .22 pistol or revolver?

A: Dry firing a S&W .22 pistol or revolver will cause damage to the firing pin.

Put in some spent casings. 2 layers of brass will soften the hammer fall. Joe

Great suggestion. The empties act as a poor man's snap caps.

As mentioned above, save some empty .22 LR brass and rotate so an unstruck part is at 12:00 of the charge hole. Also, yellow #4 drywall anchors reportedly work as well.
