Default Model 53

Took out my Model 53 22 R.E.M. Jet out for a spin yesterday.
I'm shooting reloads my dad reloaded in 1973.
40gr Jet bullet
R.E.M. Casing
Load data is so faded on the tag that it's unreadable. 44 years is a felt pens limit.
My belief is 7.5 gr 2400
Should be a mild load. No signs of pressure on the casing.
I'm getting a lot of blast from between the forcing cone and cylinder. The gap looks tight nothing out of the ordinary. Lot of grey residue on the forcing cone and front of the cylinder. Also when I looked at the fired brass in the tray I was ejecting them out on there were also flakes of unburned powder.
Not a lot but still some.
I will pull a bullet on a few and weigh them to see how many grains are there.
Is it possible that the blast n residue is from slow burning powder ( Old ) not completing the burn before it leaves the cylinder.
I know their old. They were loaded prior to my dad passing away.
I also have a 22 Jet H&R so I could just shoot them in that.
I have 600-700 of them.
Pull the bullets n repowder or shoot them for what there worth.
Waiting to here from you guys.

Unburned powder is very common with 2400. I use that power in my Model 53 Jet and 29-2. If you not having any over pressure signs I'd shoot them. It's been quite a while since I shot my Jet but don't remember any excessive residue around the forcing cone.

I agree with samnev, if you aren't getting any excess pressure indications I would shoot them up and enjoy. I would probably keep a few just because of who loaded them, but then I am sort of a sentimental old codger. I may have to dig out my M-53 and put a few down range for old time's sake.

IMHO, that load is too mild to obturate properly and the brass is not sealing off the chamber. Shoot this batch up and reload a slightly hotter load. Those signs of gas coming back past the brass will go away. ...

IMHO, the original Remington brass is on the stiff side and requires a lot of pressure for proper obturation. The newer stuff made by ...(I forget the name) is lighter in construction and will seal with a lighter pressured load. ....

I just looked in an old Sierra loading manual, 9.5g is the starting load for 2400 with a 40g bullet. So 8.8 is a bit lite. My 53 does have a pretty good blast from the gap and gets dirty as well. I think it is a normal JET thing..
