Looks to be from around 1974-ish... did it come with the box and cleaning kit too? Pictures are definitely helpful.

Welcome to the Smith & Wesson Forum from Arizona.
The Model 66 is a great handgun and would be a great choice if you were limited to only one.
Value could go from $400 to $800 depending on condition.

Welcome to the FORUM! I got my 66-2, last month. My 1st. It is a 2.5". Super clean, appears not to have been fired much. No box, papers, or stocks. Gave $725 for it. Shorter barrels normally bring more money. Enjoy your 66! Bob

Welcome. The 4 inch model 66 was a prized handgun in law enforcement during the 1970s and 80s. Many departments either issued them to their officers or allowed them for private purchase and duty use. It resisted the elements, was very accurate, easy to carry, and with the right ammo very effective. I don't know what the other end of the trade was but it seems you did good.

I have a 4" model 66 no-dash that is the former property of the Florida Highway Patrol. Very nice shape and shoots like a laser. It really loves 145 grain Silvertip.

I've had my 66-4 for just over a year now...beautiful trigger and I am able to shoot reasonably tight groups out to 15yds. Groups open up farther out but I'm sure that it's the shooter not the gun.

How about the rear sights, are they stainless or blued? Front have a red post or not? Both stainless would make for a pretty decent premium in value. and stainless was discontinued around 1974.
IMHO a 66 with all stainless sights is the most desired by collectors.

I have a 66-1 2.5" that was issued to a La. State Fire Marshal. Its like new with box. I've been wanting to add a 66 4" to my collection. So, lately, I have been searching classifieds, gun shows, and GB. Most, in nice shape, seem to be going for around the $7-750 mark. Others, in mint shape, with box, papers, and tools, go for a bit more. Haven't found the right one yet, but they aren't getting cheaper. Lol

Welcome to the forum and enjoy your M 66. They have been a favorite of mine for many years. Bought my first one in the mid 70's. It's long gone but I have been luck to find others to replace it.

That is an extremely effective load, issued by Dallas PD and by FBI.
A detective here researched shootings with it at my request. He said it proved almost too effective, but he's squeamish.

7K15564 = 1974 (7K1 - 7K26043)
The 7K numbers were also used in 1975 and 1976. The divide between those two years comes at 7K70577.

If you could only have one 66, which would you prefer the 2.5, 3, 4, or 6 in.?

I have a 66-2, 2-1/2" and love it. There is something comfortable about a K-frame. To answer your question, maybe because they're worth more and perhaps rightfully so, I'd lean toward the 3", though.
The reason I prefer the shorter barrel M66s is concealability. As you know, however, the longer the barrel, the greater the energy and velocity, so the longer barrels take full advantage of .357 Mag over .38 Spl. The difference between the two calibers in a short barrel is just not that much, so I rarely shoot magnums in my M66. And there are reports that forcing cones have split in M66s, especially shooting lighter bullet .357 Mag SD loads.
Where this is going is that if I wanted to shoot much .357 Mag, especially hot loads, I'd want a 4" or 6" barrel to get significantly improved performance over .38 Spl. And for that I'd lean toward an L-frame M686 for its extra frame strength and full diameter forcing cone. Also, the heavier M686 is more pleasant to shoot the spicier loads. But if I wanted a very accurate and comfortable .38 Spl +P revolver, a M66 6" would be hard to beat.

Here is 4K 54547 from 1974. I took the Ahrends stocks off it and it now sports a set of original Goncalo Alves targets. Looked long and hard for one of the early revolvers and finally found one for sale on this Forum. Got a nice, correct box for it off Ebay too.Not for shooting, as I have other 357's for that. Between this and my pre M19, I cannot tell which one I like best. Kind of leaning towards my pre M19 high polish. Big Larry
