Default Mod 60-4 3" W/Adjustable Sights

Found what I had really been looking for (Before the 60 & 66 I bought showed up) which was a J-frame in a 3" with adjustable sights. Well I found a 60-4 in this config in pretty nice shape in a LGS today for $549. NOW - I am on the h o r n s of a Dilemma' - shall I sell my 2" No Dash and buy the 60-4? OR definitely KEEP the 2" no dash because it will always be more desirable? Opinions please! Thanks!

The 60-4 is at a good price and there are more 2" model 60s. The best alternative is to keep both, of course .

The 2" 60 is or can be a pocket gun. The 60-4 is not a pocket gun but it is a lot easier to shoot accurately. Also its black sights do not get lost in reflection with bright light coming from undesirable angles like a fixed sight stainless revolver. A little barrel pin does not do much to distinguish your 60 from the zillions of other 2" J frames. A 60-4 looks classy and desirable to me but other members want the option of .357 available in newer J frames.

If I saw a 60-4 for that price in good condition I'd buy it immediately! As I have been looking for one for a while at a good price but want a shooter not a collectible!

Yea I didn't think the price was too bad on the surface - and I might be able to get it for a bit less - MAYBE $475 +/-. I didn't think about it until later but there were several 'new' S & W additions to the gun case and all SS. Saw several '6XX' model #s - I didn't look at them too closely but I am thinking someone sold off a collection possibly.

I had a 36-6 for about a year. Never used it and sold it before realizing how few were made another one of my regrets in selling handguns. I finally decided about20 years ago to never sell any more of my firearms.

I have made myself a list of the ones I let go to remind me why I don't want to sell any more. Every time I look at the list I want to kick myself!

Default 60-4

I would definitely buy that 60-4. I have one and it's a very nice gun. It shoots well. I paid a little more but it's LNIB. Keep the snub too.

Do you REALLY expect anything other than "both" from us revolver fans?

I understand - being a revolver fan also! I am beginning to think the 'starting' price of $549 ain't too bad after doing some research....

That's a good price for a 60-4. You might not see another for less.

NO, you should keep the 2" , and sell me the 60-4, 3" gun. It will only get you in trouble. It will entice you to want to buy more quality S&W's, you wife will be unhappy because you are spending too much on guns. Save yourself, and send me the 60-4.

If you hesitate, the gun will soon be gone, thus solving your dilemma.

If a M-60-4 in really nice shape appears, buy it. They are wonderful small trail guns and defense revolvers.

Keep the true snub, too. They don't fill exactly the same role.

If you want a small .357, I think the Ruger SP fills the bill better than a J-frame S&W. When Smith Magnumized the J-frame, they went a bridge too far, I think. The M-60-4 was just right.

My opinion is to get the 60-4. I have the 36-6 (carbon steel version) and could never be happier. I will take my 36-6 over any 2" snub.

No disrespect intended, but it sounds like you didn't learn your lesson. I gotta believe the 60-4 will be much harder to find again.

This one sold the next day at 599. ARMSLIST - For Sale: "PRICE LOWERED" Smith and Wesson model 60-4 (Target)

Very interesting model made in limited numbers.

See? I told you this would be the solution to your dilemma.

Remember this when you see another SP-101 with three-inch barrel, too. Both Ruger boards make it clear that that's in heavy demand too, and hard to get. Even finding a basic four-inch GP-100 isn't easy these days.

IF you ever find another M-60-4, maybe you can put it in layaway and pay it off. If you walk out of the store, the gun will likely be gone within a day or two.

BTW, my holsters for the M-60-4 are from El Paso Saddlery. You'll need custom holsters like those, due to the full lug barrel not fitting most holsters for three- Chief Specials.

Around here not so - I have seen several recently - and in 6"

Not necessary - I am just a tightwad who overthinks things to the point I sometimes miss good deals - but not always - like the 66 & 60 I bought.

Texas Star is correct - the 60-4 is "just right." If you have any interest in it, I would not let it slip away. I have one and like it so well I wish I had a spare. The 60-10 and later guns just aren't the same.

Late to the party, but I have to agree with the members who encourage anyone to buy a 60-4 where found and when found. Poor Dale53 had to find one for me to buy so it was safe to have me visit his home... I lusted after HIS 60-4 so strongly. I'm sure I COULD live without mine, but I'm not sure I would WANT to!

If you can find a used, or "new old stock" Safariland #1 Kit holster made for the 4" S&W Kit Gun, they will fit a Model 60-4 perfectly. I have used mine for my Model 63 .22 L.R, Model 631 .32 Magnum, as well as my Model 60-4 .38 Special.

Here's the Safariland #1 Kit with the Model 60-4.

Saw one at a gun show last weekend, priced somewhat higher. I and a forum member tried to get the other to buy it. I won out, it's his. 😀 Nice gun, easy to hide and shoot.

I like old Safariland holsters and had one like that, but basket-stamped and a darker, wonderful golden brown. I sold it with the M-34 that had such bad extraction that I had to pound out empty .22 cases with a rubber mallet! I do have a three-inch holster from them, but it doesn't accept the full lug barrel. You were lucky , and you still have a holster for a four-inch gun. I wanted the right length.

One of my El Paso holsters is their Model 2, virtually identical to the old Safariland M-29.

I have quite a few of the old Safariland holsters. I wish they still made them.

I sold an adjustable sight 2" 60-1 (Ashland special) and bought my 60-4, no regrets from a using standpoint. I couldn't hit the ground with the 2" 60, but the -4 shoots like a much bigger gun. It is one of my top three favorite and most used revolvers, and is not for sale. Then, I also have a no-dash 60 that is my daily carry.

And I know you can get basically the same gun in .357, but I have no desire for a .357 in a gun that size; perfectly happy with the good old .38 Special in this platform. If I want .357 power I'll carry my 2 1/2" 66.

Saw one about two years ago at a local gun show. Finish was terrible - lots of scratches = he wanted $900 !!!!! Buy it! I had one in the late 90s, wasn't used so traded it off. Have regretted it since. Did acquire a 60-15, which is a magnum but not near as nice. Nuff said.

I stumbled on this 60-4 a few weeks ago, and believe me I know the drill. "Some revolvers - you just have to buy them when you see them." With shop member discount - $585 OTD. First one I had ever seen in a shop. Pulled out this basket weave S&W holster that got put away when I sold my M63 4". I'll get a 3" holster at some point, but this will work nicely for trail walks. BTW - it shoots real good with 158 grains. Thx - PEN

While I have a 4" Model 63...... my "Kit Gun" is a 3" 60-10 micro-686.

Shot shells to .357...... but generally carried with .+P .38s

Very sad! - but very pretty mini-cokes.

Me too. Aren't they lovely? I have the exact same holster you described only mine is sized for my 4-inch Combat Magnum. I was a young fellow with not much cash to spare when I found it in the used holster bin at a local shop. Hardly a mark on it and easily restored to new appearance with a tiny bit of leather cream. I thought I was the luckiest boy in Indiana.

Still have both Model 19 and holster, all these years later...

I have a shooter grade 60-4 we could probably come to terms on when you get ready for one.
