The Model 38 (no-dash) was made 1957 - 1988.
If it has original numbers matching diamond grips it would be from about 1968 or earlier.
If it has a pinned barrel it would be from about 1982 or earlier.
If you can provide a serial number someone can probably give you a better estimate of the date.

J with 5 numbers following would be from 1969-'70. Hope this is helpful.
