Default Model 66 - Trying to Establish Providence ***Wayne Newton***

I have a Model 66 that I am trying to establish provenance on. What's peaked my interest is that S&W appears to have intentionally stamped their insignia on the side plate in a slightly different place to allow for the hand engraving of "Wayne Newton 1976". It would be great if I were able to prove if this was his at one point in time...presentation piece, personal carry piece, etc...

Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

I would try to contact Wayne Newton. Email him in Las Vegas and maybe he'll cut you a letter of authenticity.

Welcome to the Forum

I am guessing that you have not ordered a S&W Historical letter on this revolver. The information that you seek may be right there.

Smith & Wesson Historical Foundation - Letter Process - Insuring that the rich history of Smith & Wesson will continue for generations to come

Contacting Mr Newton (or his staff) personally is another great route to go.

Sorry, I'm not trying to be the grammar cop, but if your going to contact Mr. Newton, the word you mean is "Provenance".

Good luck.

Welcome to the FORUM! That must be an early 66. The reason that I that is my buddies no dash has the insignia on the side plate also. My 66-2, has a blank side plate. Mine has it on the left side. Whether it is legit or not, it is a cool gun! Bob

A history letter from Mr. Jinks should verify the engraving if it was done at the factory.

I hope you get the provenance you desire. In the meantime, those buggered plate screws suggest that the revolver has passed through someone with a heavy hand. No offense intended, but have you removed the side plate and stocks for a careful examination? I only bring it up because in addition to the buggered slot screws, it looks as though there's some rust and pitting on the butt next to the serial number. That snubby is a classic, regardless of whether or not it was owned by Wayne.

I hope you get it authenticated, but it wouldn't be hard for someone to take off a side plate and have Elvis engraved and ask a premium. There are scammers and fakers everywhere trying to get money under false pretenses. The buggered up screws would really make me think that this was a scam.

My interest is piqued as well.

You never know, it could be legitimate. If someone was pulling a scam, wouldn't you think he would pick a deceased celebrity? Then it is less likely anyone could authenticate it.

Also, nothing against Mr. Newton but some other celebrity of greater renown (at least in the gun world) could be selected by a scammer to increase its perceived value.

The rust may have been caused by perspiration if it was a carry piece. To some, that could be a big plus.

My Son was born in the Nellis AFB Hospital.
There was a nurse there who was Wayne Newton Fan no.1.
She tried to get all the new Moms to name their kid Wayne or Wayne Newton.
And she really did know Wayne. As a prominent fan club member, she had been to events out at Shanendoah .

Who knows maybe ol' Wayne will want it back and be willing to pay a handsome price like that guy that owns Papa Johns Pizza paid for his old Camaro.

My 66 no dash 4" has the s&W roll mark in the exact same location.
I don't think the location is significant at all.
