Default What's the opinion on a 6.5 Nickel 29-2?

I've already been to GB to do the price research, but this gun has some serious "presentation case" damage. Those wood boxes are a blessing and a curse. The gun is pitted on the cylinder, frame, barrel, and grips where it sat in contact with the blue fuzz for years on end. It's excellent and clean otherwise.

How much would you pay for a nice early 70's 6 1/2" Nickel 29-2 with bed rash? A super clean shooter. (Includes mentioned wooden coffin).

It depends on how bad the pitting is, but I'm thinking $850 if it's not too bad. I prefer not to hassle with nickel, unless pristine.

The dealer cleaned it up pretty good, but the pits on the frame corner near the S&W address are deep enough that they have to be through the nickel.

The cylinder is more "freckled", but probably deep enough that they would never polish out without going into the steel.

It's tough to tell on nickel because polished steel looks very similar to polished nickel

Question

I would not buy it for that $850.price. The gun is really just a shiny shooter and you can buy shooter grade blue 29-2s for less that that. I don't know what the dealer's ask is but maybe you can quote him S&W or Ford's price for re-nickel and get him to share part of it??? After refin. it's still not valued as NIB.

Why $850 for a pitted 44Mag.? They are about the ugliest gun ever made anyway. Best

OK people, I just offered my opinion. That's all it is, my opinion, like it or not. How about you offer your opinion like the OP asked?

Gawdawful. A travesty. Send it to me for proper disposal.

Seriously, it's a shooter. I'd offer $600 tops. As a shooter with no mechanical flaws, worth the 6 bills at best. If the box is otherwise in good condition, a restoration and sale might get you another $50 or so. Otherwise, S&WIowegan has it right - you can get shooter-grade blued ones for ~$600.

Nothing wrong with a 29-2 in that length or finish. I wouldn't pay that price for the condition you described........but I do like my nickel.

I'd pass on it.
Nickel is a coating like paint is on a car. Anybody that works on car bodies knows that a small rust spot is much bigger when the paint is sanded off, the paint over it just hasn't bubbled up yet.
Same with nickel coating, once rust get thru it, it's spreading underneath, just hasn't flaked up yet.

I'd save a little more and get one that you won't have to make excuses for.

PS: those wood coffins bring a couple hundred buck. Ford's gun finishing could make that gun look like a new one for about $350.

PS-S: If you just have to leave the gun in the presentation case always use the anti-rust paper.

If the metal underneath isn't heavily pitted, the factory will re-nickel it and do a nice job (factoring in shipping) for about $350. Figure about $75 for Joe Cebull to redo the case liners, then note at the end you will have a nice but refinished gun and offer the seller accordingly.
