Default Mod 19-4
So I know I have a Model 19-4, 357mag, blue, 6inch barrel, serial number 46k46xx, I bought it used in 1984, so I am wondering how old it is.

Looking in the SCSW, it looks to be around 1978-1979 vintage.

BTW, we love pics of nice S&W revolvers (hint, hint ).

Back when I bought my first 6-inch Model 19 (a 19-3 version) the popular wisdom was that a K38 would outshoot it when using .38 wadcutters for target shooting. I was stubborn, couldn't afford two guns, and I really wanted the Model 19 more than a K38. I shot a lot of wadcutters through that gun and never could see anything to complain about whether using the wadcutters or full-charge .357s. It was one of my favorites for many years. I still have the gun and still shoot it now and then. I'll bet you will really like yours. They are great guns for target and field use. Congrats on your new sixgun!

My first Model 19 was a 6" as well and soon traded for some reason.
I have replaced it twice - the last one is here to stay.

Welcome to the forum. My first S&W was a new 6" 19-3 I got in about 1974.
Been sliding down the slope ever since.

I was actually very lucky, sometime around 1987 I sold it to a close friend, he in turn gave it to his dad. We have always remained good friends, a month ago he came to my place and handed me the gun, I said nice, looks like the one I had, I honestly forgot that I had sold it to him. He gave it back to me, I offered to pay for it, but he said no, it was worth our friendship, friends like this are the best to have, and now it is back in my collection.

Nice revolver you have there! My six inch dash five thinks its a M-14, and I'm not going to tell it any different.
