Default S&W 65-2 4 inch

Spied one at a pawn show. Looked good, tight, but with scuffed grips.

Now here is the question.

It had a pinned in barrel, recessed chambers, flash chromed hammer.

BUT, it had case hardened trigger! And I think someone lightened the trigger a bit but the screws are in good shape.

Serial Number 1D78xxx.

Ever seen one with flash chromed hammer but a case hardened trigger?

Now they want $549. I doubt that is a great price. So, is it worth pursuing?

Thanks!

Talk it down $50-$75 and jump on it, looking really hurt while doing so. Just put on sunglasses and ignore the hammer. They're pretty cheap if you want to replace it.

Thanks. I already have a K frame flash chromed hammer just sitting here doing nothing.

I'll sneak back in a week or two. At least $75 less. Two months ago I got a S&W 681 4 inch .357 for $450 plus tax and about a month weeks ago a mint S&W 19-2 4 inch for $500 plus tax (yes I need my head examined!) No hurry for another one just yet!

Either the hammer or trigger has been replaced. From the factory, depending on exactly when built, the gun could have had either flash-chromed or color case-hardened trigger and hammer, but they would always match.

BTW, the barrel is not pinned in. It is screwed in and depends on torque to retain the barrel, exactly like current production guns. All the barrel pin has ever done is act as a safety to prevent the barrel from unscrewing more than a few degrees in case the barrel worked loose from shooting. The gun was still useable in an emergency, even if it was slightly loose. Guns made since the barrel pin was deleted in the early 1980s still come loose from time to time, and can be completely removed by hand without the pin to stop this.

A pinned and recessed 65 in that SN range should have a flash chromed hammer and trigger. The case hardened trigger is an obvious replacement. If it really matters to you that it be correct, flash chromed triggers are easy to find. In today's market, the price is not all that out of line. Like Excitable Boy said, if you can talk him down a little, all the better. Good luck.

When I first received my 64 issue it had a flash chromed hammer, and narrow flash chromed trigger. The sheriff dept had 65's and they were the same. These guns were issued in late 70's, early 80's. Many of us, myself included changed the trigger to the wide trigger which was case hardened. That might explain the one you are looking at.

A gun is only worth what you are willing to pay for it. But our dept IIRC paid around $150 for each model 64. Buying them individual was around $200.

Have no mercy when dealing with pawn shops... they have about half of their asking price invested in that 65. Take some cash with you and negotiate.

$549 for a 4 inch K Frame in 357 Magnum is a decent price, but you seem to be getting some good deals lately. See what you can do, but $549 is not a bad price.

And that is right. I know they have to make a profit but yes they give people about 1/2 the value of the gun then mark it up to many times over the book value of the gun!

We will see!
