Default model 10 or model 15

I want to pickup another handgun.
The model 10 & 15 come to mind.
The model 15 has adjustable rear sight.
Do you think that is worth a little extra?
thanks

Yes it is. But both are good guns.

I too, think the adjustable sights, are worth it.

I have read COUNTLESS opinions, that adjustable sights, are "fragile" for duty use.

Bull. My opinion.

They give you a vastly improved sight picture, and ARE adjustable for various loads.

I've been carrying adj. sighted revolvers for over fifty years, and I have never damaged one.

I also own several Model 10's, but don't try to shoot 1" groups @ 25 yards with them. Not that you cannot, but they are harder to see, for sure.

I have never adjusted any adjustable sight; including my 1947 K-22. But it is always good to have the ability to.

I vote for getting one of each.

Barrel length and intended use..... IMHO are the key in decision making.

Concealed Carry..... 2" Model 10 round butt

Range or open carry/ woods bumming........ 4" Model 15

Coooool factor..... 2" Model 15 or 3" Model 10

Retro:Mall Ninja/Security Guard.......4" Model 10

My vote is for the Model 15. As Targetguy says, I also have rarely adjusted sights on my handguns, the exception being ones I used in competition. I am fortunate to own nice examples of both the Model 10 and 15.

Get them both!! Seriously if you get one, you will prob want the other one too. I have a 10-6 bull barrel and a 15-3 both 4". The 15 will flat drill one after another, but that 10 sure is fun to shoot as well. Good luck!!

Forget money. What do you prefer? I tend to like fixed sight K frames with heavy barrel. Do have both though. Decisions are tough sometimes. Good luck on your hunt! Bob

All humans don't see exactly the same as other humans, conversely they don't all see the sights exactly the same either. Adjustable sights are well worth it. Most of mine have been tweaked just a smidge to the right.

I have never adjusted sights however, I find it easier to sight. It's more similar to semi autos.

That being said I have both and like both

The 15-6 heavy barrel would be my choice of the 2 models but better yet would be a 4" M66 or M19 with hammer mounted firing pins.

I carried a great shooting 1966 Model 10-6 for 20 years and shot many 1000s of rounds from it without any issues. My eyes shot it and all other fixed sight S&W revolvers a tad to the right of point of aim.

Another 1, you may wish to consider, is a 67. It is a stainless 15. I have a no dash. It is my wife's favorite to shoot. Bob

I have always preferred adjustable sighted revolvers. When I first came on the job I carried a Model 15. I never experienced any problems with the sights shifting the point of aim/point of impact. I still have the revolver.

For ME, the sights are easier to pick up under exigent circumstances and/or dim light. I also have two Model 10's and a Model 58 that shoot quite well. But I always return to the Model 15.

Find out what works for you and have at it.

Good luck.

Totally agree with the above, espcially Coooool factor. The 2" Md 15 with square butt is indeed a really cool gun.

You sir have obviously never had to enter or exit a patrol car in a hurry for any of a number of reasons. It happens, and I've personally seen many of the rear sight blades missing from adjustable sighted revolvers in the old days when I was a LEO. It happens frequently with the rear sight hitting the car door and it eventually takes it toll on the rear blade.

To the OP,.....for range work or woods walking, the adjustable sighted Model 15 is a great revolver, but for serious work as a duty or self defense weapon, I'd opt for the fixed sighted Model 10 for the reasons stated above. As others have stated, the Model 64 and Model 67 are great guns that will have a great resistance to the elements, and I have several of both models which I enjoy. Either one will serve you, and the purpose should determine which will meet your needs the best. It's your decision, and good luck.......

Offhand, I forget how many Model 10s I have. Mostly 2" snubs, a couple of 4" guns. One Model 15 2" snub. We won't even count the Model 64 that I had rebuilt into a 2" snub. I am extremely fond of the fixed sights on the Model 10s and the M64. I spent years in cowboy action shooting and once you get used to the ease of use of fixed sight revolvers the adjustable sights just seem superfluous.

No gripe against those adjustable sights; most of my other S&W revolvers have them, and I have never adjusted one of them, either!
But I carry a 2" K frame Model 10 or Model 64 for a reason.

The OP doesn't give us barrel lengths in his choice or maybe I missed it. if it's a range gun and something for the grandkids I'd say pick the better looking one.

Can't really go wrong with either one.

M10 = Hand Ejector, Military and Police, being made since 1899 non-stop, an iconic firearm, the quintessential revolver.

M15 = Essentially a M10 with adj. sights. Called the Combat Masterpiece.

Just listen to that... Masterpiece.

You obviously need both. And you have reminded me how much I need an M15 myself.

PS: Don't forget that you also need an M19 - Combat Magnum. (Basically an M15 in .357 Magnum).

I've been shooting both for decades. Fine guns, no doubt, but I prefer the looks of the M15. S&W sight blades are slightly fragile and a blow at the right point can bend or damage them, though I've only seen this once. If you get used to the rear sight picture on the Model 10, I don't think it's any better or worse than a Model 15s sights.

I believe the Model 10's heavy barrel makes it a bit easier to shoot well. The 15 always seemed a bit light up front to me, but it will certainly shoot as well as the Model 10. The Model 10 will usually shoot heavy bullets to point of aim or close to it.

My personal observations only and I don't expect everyone to agree...

A 10 is a great gun. A 15 is even better. Buy what you can find locally at a fair price. Won't go wrong either way.

The most accurate and smoothest S&W I own is a 15-4. Awesome gun! However, I do have an itch for a heavy barrel model 10. Never cared too much for the looks of the pencil barrel 10's, but after handling a few, I can see its one I'll eventually own. They feel light and quick, and it seems a little easier/faster to pick up the front sight. Liking them more and more. Lol

One thing I like about the 15's, 10's, and 67's is that you can still find nice ones at reasonable prices. The prices haven't shot up like some of the K frame magnums. I find lots of people want the magnums, which are great guns as well, and tend to kind of overlook the 38 spl. That's fine by me, Lol. Of the magnums that I have/had, I mostly shot 38 spl anyway. I own 5 K-frame 38spl's, now. It seems that's all I shoot now days, and I'm having a blast doing it!

Then I'd get a Model 15. I have a Model 67 no dash, the stainless version of the Model 15, and two Model 10-8s heavy barrel. The larger sights on my M67 are give a better sight picture for punching paper. And police use had proven they are robust enough for daily carry.

However, for a packing/truck/sportsman's gun I prefer the lower, rounded, fixed sight M10. The fixed sight is just a bit slicker than the adjustable. I think of the M10 as having the revolver version of the 1911 low profile Novak sight. Both of my M10-8s shoot to point of aim with 158gr +P loads so that's what I load them with. Simple, reliable, and effective.

I have both, a Model 10-6 and a Model 15-2. I can shoot about the same size group at 30ft. with both, but I got to say I like the model 15 a little better. Can't go wrong either way.
