Default What a nightmare! S&W 66-1

Well I was a my local pawn shop (the story of my life) and today a came across a S&W 66-1 2 1/2 inch Combat Magnum. Now I have one or two of them already but I'm a fool for S&W K frame snubs.

Well I asked to see this one. Saw the price tag of $514!!! And then I saw the reason for that price.....

SOMEONE had left that gun beside salt water or something like it. The trigger guard was pitted and pitted badly. Bit of the frame to. Ruined the collectors value of that pitiful gun!

I left it where it was. Talk about depressing.

It would have to be quite rough for me to leave it behind at $514.00.

I actually like to find revolvers like this--you can shoot the heck out of them, not get too worked up over cleaning, throw them in the tackle box, under the ATV seat or in the glove compartment, etc. and not worry about it.

Lets just say the pits can not be buffered out. They are deep. Some can but not all. Yes a shooter. Nice shooter but a shooter. Already have a 19-5 snub if I want to just shoot it.

Maybe I'll go by tomorrow and photo it. Post some pics here.

"Buffing it out" is just going to **** it up even more than it is. I hope whoever buys it just shoots it and leaves it as-is.

True. I've heard this...not sure if it's correct, but I've heard that every time somebody polishes a stainless Smith & Wesson revolver a puppy gets cancer.

Several times in my 30 year career I booked blood contaminated metal firearms as evidence. I could hear the rusting...or I imagined it. Had to force my self not to tamper the evidence by given the innocent weapon a cleaning.
A 300 pound idiot that bliz attacked me, had me in middle of road pounding my head onto the asphalt. Imagine his suprise when I reached the Derringer in my uniform shirt pocket...22 round contact shot took his right bicep off. At the er I wiped me and the gat free of blood after the pictures were taken. I explained to the grand jury that weapon was a faimly hearloom passed down from grand father, and had to ensure my son would be able to receive it. As its the great state of Texas....no problem.
Miscreants mother wailed I didn't fight fair, should have wrestled with Jr. Got word he passed recently in the pen.
Speed on convict...H@$# is only half full. Son carries weapon as 2nd backup 20 years later. I've with my effort
Right side is different color? Than left from the chemical reaction to blood and age.

That's not too bad. I'd be all over it $400 or $450. At $500/$520 it'll probably sell before too long.

Those buggered up side screws are also a little concerning. Is the middle screw the flat screw that is supposed to be under the grip?

Would make a nice Fitz Special. Now why someone would want a Fitz Special is beyond me - but that would be a good candidate for one.

One of those in excellent condition can probably be had around here for about $700 to $750. If anything less than excellent bothers you, the $200-$250 savings wouldn't be worth it. I think a lot of people would would take this one for the savings and how they might use it. It's just up to the individual.

Possibly because having a "Flitz Special" is better than not having one at all.

The pictured specimen looks like it was worked over with a file and/or a chisel. Can't tell about any pitting on the underside but if it's bad then I concur with the value being in the $400 to $450 range at best. regards, hardcase60

That would not bother me a bit. I do prefer blued steel to stainless though. I had a stainless Ruger 2 3/4in Security-Six that had similar pitting. It sold at auction for $400 recently.

Well those pits you are a deep. Even a dream tool using cratex would not get it all. They said after 30 days the price will drop. I'll check back there next week when the more senior manager is there and see if a deal can be made.

Yes I'd love it as a shoot 'en gun. I have a 66-1 in mint, another 66-1 that has no pin (made that way, recessed chambers but no pin.) But those two are picked up. Love to have a shooter so I could practice and yes, maybe even carry it.

I was thinking that I'd put down $400 for it and be prepared to walk away.

Same gun shooter condition just sold here in Southern California for $1100. Yeah, that's what I have to contend with.

I like the tag on it 'Pre Owned' - ya don't say?
$450 tops. With a little patience those pits could be improved by 50% or more - I know - I have done it myself.

That's not so bad. You should have seen the 19-4 I bought several years ago that had been in a gun rug and gotten wet and forgotten about for several months. Several places of pitting (bad) on a gun that had maybe 1 box shot through it. Fortunately I bought it for $265, and spent $135 on a metaloy finish. Didn't turn out too bad.

Well folks... someone got it! Not me but it's gone. At least I'm glad it's away from my sight... it was just so tempting (but then I have a S&W 681 on lay-away now!!!)

My deepest sympathies to you regarding the one that got away. Most of us have been there. Congratulations on putting the 681 on lay-away!! hardcase60

You missed on a Great Buy! That can be cleaned up relatively easy. The trigger guard just needs a little re-shaping and the Side Plate to be replaced. The little bit of pitting on the frame below the Side Plate could be lightly polished out. But, I sure like the idea of doing nothing to the existing except Metaloy or its equal. ...
