Default I made the trade (photos up): model 58 vs 3" 629-1

I've just been offered (locally) a 3 " 629-1 in trade for my model 58 (can be seen in the marketplace). i don't have a solid grasp of the market value of either. I've seen mid $700s to over $1k.

I don't think either would be for personal use. i already have a 4" M29-2, and I've decided I'm not ready to take on .41 when I already have tons of .357 and .44 around.

Assuming that both are in similar VG+ condition, what are realistic market prices? My first inclination is to take the trade. I suspect there are a lot more folks who "need" a shorty bear-blaster than initiates in the Secret Cult of the .41 Magnum, so the 629 should be easier to sell, even if I can't make any more off of it.

Thoughts?

If the 629-1 has the original factory combats, I'd jump on the trade

Seems like a fair enough trade......especially for you.

If you want to get into a more detailed discussion the 629-1 with 3" barrel might be worth a bit more and might be a bit more desirable ............. unless of course you're the guy looking real hard for a model 58.

It has nice wood combat grips, but I think they're aftermarket:

If not interested in the .41 Magnum do the trade. With the 629 not having the factory Combats, value is closer to equal.

I'd say the value is a push. If you like the 629, do the swap. I had a 3" 629 for a while, great for packing. Full house loads certainly made a person sit up and take notice!

I would take that 629-1 in a flash, and I AM a 41 cult member! I just bought a NIB 629-1, 3" with the factory combats, paid well over $1k and was glad to get it.

I would see if the .41 was a former service pistol and if it had any agency markings that might make it a more interesting option. Those 58s don't necessarily show up as often as a 629......but then again a short barrel 629 doesn't either.

...also depends on the age of the 58 and if it has the original grips which are serialized to the gun...

The 3" 629-1 without the original grips will run in the $900s last I looked...maybe a little more now. A "N" prefix 58 with the correct grips will be in the $900 area and a "S" prefix usually around a grand...that's for 90%+ condition guns with the original grips.

Those are certainly aftermarket grips, so they don't add much to the value. If you prefer 44 do the trade. I don't think there is a big difference in value between the two, but we haven't seen pictures of the 58 either.

I'm just a push-over for the big bore, round butt snubs & not crazy for fixed sights. The 44 grips look like Badger to me, and do not help the value. Looks like a pretty even trade to me too. If you take the trade & you don't have a set laying around, you'll probably start looking for factory combats, and that'll cost you also. Ain't gun collecting great?!

Keep the 58. They are still making 3" 69's but they only made 58's for a short while. You most likely will never see them again. Their value is only going up. Keeping the 58 is a great investment. The 69, not so much.

I have to respectably disagree. I just gave almost $1K for a 629-1 3" without the proper grips and was glad to have found it. I am indeed now on the hunt for the correct combats. I have been watching and following the 629's for a long time and they are definitely not going down in value. As always, YMMV.

Looks like he's talking about the 44 special, not the mag.

Honestly, though, I'm not keeping either. I'm selling the M58 now, and if I trade I'll be selling the M629. I admire both greatly, but neither are what I'm looking for, so it's really just a matter of which I could sell more easily or for more money. I'm not in a huge hurry to sell, but this offer came along, and it seems like it might work out well to trade.

Wish I still had my 629-1 Backpacker.... so yea, I'd trade.

I made the trade this afternoon. The 629-1 seems almost new. Thanks folks! The other gentleman was ex-San Antonio PD and was tickled to get the Model 58, so I feel extra good about he deal.

Here it is - it looks gorgeous, with just a few scratches in the stainless. I've decided not to hang onto it, and listed it in the classifieds here. If nobody buys it right away I'll go try it at the range for fun.
