According to the SCSW, it was shipped in 1974. And the speedloader stocks on it weren't used until the 1980's, so they are not the original stocks. Other than that, it looks real nice.

Manufactured in 1973. 4K numbers were used in three different years, 1972, 1973 and 1974. The range for 1973 is 4K1628 to 4K54104. As muddocktor stated, it could have shipped in 1974, since S&W did not ship guns in serial order.

Your Combat Magnum is in very nice condition, although the stocks are later than the gun. I'd put the current price in the $500 range.

The stocks on the gun are book end matched and in 99.9% condition. What stocks are period correct for my 19-3 ? Does anyone have a pic? Maybe I can trade into a set in the accessories section once I know what I am looking for. Thanks guy's your help it is much appreciated. John

4K7XXX should date to 1973. It's possible it didn't ship until later.

The 19-3 was produced 1967 - 1977.

Your stocks/grips could arguably be correct. Per the SCSW (Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson) - "By the mid-1970s (early 1980s for N frames) a larger speed loader cut was incorporated..."

I would not go out of your way to look for different stocks as the current stocks are beautiful and could likely be original. Prior to the full cut out for speed loader the area was relieved.Here's an example of relieved grips:


The SCSW 4th edition cites a value of $600 for a Model 19 in excellent condition and in my neck of the woods it would more likely have a $700 price tag (or more) at a LGS (local gun store). I haven't checked Gun Broker lately but successfully closed auctions would give you an idea of value too.

Here in the Dallas/Ft. worth, TX area that would command a 700 + dollar price tag. I could easily see myself opening my wallet for it.

I seriously doubt a Combat Magnum from 1973 or even 1974 would have the speedloader cut. It is possible one that shipped in 1977 could have it, but I find that unlikely. They pretty much only show up on the 19-4. Anyway, that's my opinion based on quite a bit of experience. Those shown on the left in g8rb8's picture are the most likely (wider relief). But I basically agree that it isn't a big deal. The stocks you have are fine and if you plan to use speedloaders, they are actually preferred.

On the price, the other guys are probably right. I tend to forget that .357 Magnum revolvers don't sell for as much up here in Alaska.

Not correcting anybody, but if that gun were in a shop in my area priced at $500...I suspect a fight would break out:-) It would not last long at $650
