Default Pachmayr rubber frips?

I've been looking for some new grips for a Model 10. I like the Pachmayr Grippers..(the pictures at least). However in reading the reviews on Midway and Amazon there seems to be a lot of complaints about the fit of the Pachmayrs vs. Hogues...

Has anyone had a lot of problems with the Pachmayrs?

I had presentation grips on my model 64 40 years ago, they fit fine. But that was 40 years ago. Personally I do not like the feel of the houges, or the looks. Back then rubber grips were better in the rain, and in the cold, most of us used them. I turned my gun in with them still on the gun, wish I knew where I put the service grips.

I just dug through my box of Pachmayrs. I found a pair of K frame "Gripper" stocks. If you send me an address via PM I'll send them to you gratis. If you like them, keep them. If not you can send them back.

I just noticed that there's a pair of K frame Pachmayr Presentation grips also in the box. If you want, I can send both and you can return the pair you don't like.

Edit: I don't have any "Frips" though . . .

I have always liked pachmayr grips - had presentations on my mod 19 for years - currently have grippers on my 66 but they are a bit thin but I am getting used to them. Got diamond pro on my 60 and they are perfect on it - I wish they made a diamond pro style for a square butt k frame.

I just bought and installed some Grippers on my Charter Bulldog 44 and in a short time I put the original grips back on.
The grippers are much longer and suck for CC hiding. The back strap has a gap that I can fit my thumb nail into. There is a 1/8' gap where they are supposed to come together just below the hammer. The grips have probably a 1/32' gap to the gun sides. I tried several times moving the grips to get rid of the gaps but it wasn't happening. IMO The molds they use need some serious attention for better fit to the gun.
I put the grippers back in the package and put the OEM grips back on that fit like a glove. CTD gave me a refund of cost of the grips only and I can keep the grips also. That was fine with me. I don't know what I am going to do with them.

I have the opposite issue - all my Pachs fit like a glove but my Hogues not so much. My secret though (don't tell anyone else) is to but NOS Pachmayrs off ebay and get the pre-medallion style. I stick with the large Pachmayr presentation grips because I have very big hands. It seems to me the pre-medallions have better fit and finish. Generally run around $25.

My problem with Hogue grippers is they don't fit tightly along the backstrap.

In my experience the older Pachs fit very well, and new ones do not! I've purchased a few sets recently that won't even go on the gun.

This thread has some interesting comments. My experience with Pachmayr stocks goes back to the 1970s. Nearly all of those I have were made before the turn of the century. I've never had fit problems with any of them. The presence or absence of the Pachmayr medallion seems to have little to do with it, but age may be the difference. The medallion goes back quite a ways, although I don't know when it first appeared.

As for Hogue grips, I've never liked them at all. I've had a few on used guns I've bought, but they always came off after the first shooting session, sometimes before. None of those I've had are still in my inventory. I've either given them away to unsuspecting victims or thrown them out.

I have always preferred the looks and feel of Pachmayr's.
Have them on a model 64 K frame and Ruger MKII, both fit fine.
Remember they have to fit a wide variety of frames made over the many years, no grip is going to fit every model of every gun ever made ...you might have to do a little fitting with an X-Acto knife , some people don't understand and expect perfection ....they complain a lot for no reason.

Just last week or so, my sister had a cookout and invited all the other kids. I got a text from her asking me to bring some hamburger "bins."

If she can ask for "bins," I guess you can ask about "frips."

Of course, she got ragged about it, too.

But to the original topic, I've used both over the years and I prefer Pachmayr's. I've got a set of Presentation's on a Model 24-3, and a set of Grippers on a Model 10. I have no idea how old they are, the Grippers do have the medallion, so they might have some age on them. The Presentation's came on the gun when I got it. I've never noticed any fit issues with them.

I've got three or four Hogue's around here, but don't use them. Can't fault them really but I just don't care for them as much.

I've got packs on all the guns I shoot regularly. Some fit a little better than others (may be age) but none fit bad enough to affect the function. I do have a couple with a small gap on front but nothing major. Haves hogues on one but don't like as well.

Uncle Mike's were the best. I had Pachmayrs on my revolvers from the start back in the early 80s, and they fit fine, in contrast to the Hogues, which felt way too large; the grip was okay, but there were always chunks of superfluous rubber sticking out everywhere. Then I discovered Uncle Mike's, and all my Pachmayrs on my use guns (J and K frames) were replaced. Too bad they're out of production, but you can still find them in bins at gun shows.

Pachs are good for shooting not so much for looking.

I fit a pair of grippers to a K frame SB The problem I had was where the two sides come together in the front. One side was very slightly bigger than the other so you could feel the seam. I used a file to even them because I didn't trust myself to attempt using an exacto knife for fear of gouging them. The half round file worked great in the finger grooves. Work slowly with a medium texture. After surgery, they feel great. No more seam. The area that had material removed has a slightly different look, but I expect it to age and even up. It's all about the feel for me. They feel much better now. I admit to being a bit recoil sensitive and the soft backstrap took all the sting out of the .357 rounds for me. Felt like I could have shot them all day. Love my Pachs.

Old Timer Story: Back in the early to mid '70s one of our officers who had been laid off from NYPD came into roll call w/the rubber grips on his issued Model 15 four inch. Any modification, w/the exception of wood oversize factory grips, had to be approved by the range officer and he was not aware of this. Grips came off and the range officer would not OK the rubber grips for about a year. I eventually got a set but removed them when I found rust beginning under them on the upper frame.

I use Bill Davis grips on my K and L frames. They fit my hand,
easy to use speed loader and with 2 screws no interference with main spring.

Yep. That's a common problem with rubber grips and the reason I won't keep them on any of my guns.

I too was looking for a set and read about the poor fit on many guns. I bought a set of Hogue Bantams for my 66 on eBay for $19 shipped. They feel good have the open back strap and exposed butt.

Anything I shoot regularly has Goodyears on it. Pachmayr Compacs on J Frames and Hogue finger groove monogrips on K Frames. The original grips are tucked safely away so they can be easily changed back at anytime.

Thanks, for posting the Davis grips. They look comfortable to me. They also look good on your gun. Why didn't you get the ORANGE 1's? Bob

I just ordered a set, I'll give them a try. Though I wish the screws were black. How well does the grip fit the frame? seems that most of the support is forward on the grip.

Default Thank you JP

I just received these Pachmayr from [email protected] put them on my Model 15, as my Model 10 is at the gunsmiths getting some new springs...anyway...they look and feel great...I will probably be able to shoot it tomorrow, but they look perfect.

I remember having to qualify with Model 10s and 15s in the Air Force with the old square-butt grips and not really liking them...these are far more comfortable...thank you muchly.

I owe you...

The Russians had no idea who they were messing with, a 19 year old AMMO troop with 6 bullets...

I carried the Model 15 for two years in SE Asia. I frankly didn't care what the stocks were like (they were Magnas). I wasn't sorry it was on my person. But I'm glad I never had to use it in anger.

Default On my J frames...

The alloy job has a Hogue monogrip. I like it a lot.

The square frame has Pachmehrs. I like them a lot.

I use both several models of Pachmayrs and Uncle Mike's. Both are very satisfactory.

Pachmayr Grippers are the only grips I found that really fit my GP-100 right. They fit my hand, too, although I think I slightly prefer the Presentation model, which I have on a S&W M-66-3. Snubs tend to get Pach. Compacs. But the Uncle Mike's J-frame grips that came on my M-60-4 are pretty good. I just prefer the Compacs.

Jack, why didn't you care about the grips on your Combat Masterpiece? I was an AF cop, but we weren't allowed to change grips.

The Colt service grips really fit my hand better than the S&W Model 10, etc., but unless the barrel is turned slightly to align the sights correctly, the Colt will not shoot right in many cases. This had not been done to the few Colts at my base, so I always chose a Victory Model unless I carried a .45. I had a privately made Jordan style holster for the .45 auto.

I generally used a Bianchi Model 5 holster with .38's. My bosses weren't gun-savvy and couldn't care less about holsters. A couple of guys wore Western style rigs they'd gotten in Vietnam. We only drew AR-15's, carbines, or shotguns if something special was anticipated. Otherwise, it was our handguns and night sticks. Never had to shoot anyone. Just as well, for our .38 ammo was that weak M-41 stuff until the NCOIC took unit funds, went off base, and bought some Hi-Velocity (.38-44) ammo. We didn't have enough Combat Masterpieces, so even the commissioned officers bought their own guns. (Enlisted men couldn't do that.)

I tried rubber grips on autos, and don't like them in that role. On revolvers, they're very practical, and I don't dislike the looks, either.

All I meant was that it didn't matter. Having the sidearm was what I cared about in those days. Of course, I had fired hundreds of rounds through K and N frame Smiths before I went into the AF, and when I went to qualify on the Model 15 (with Magna stocks), I simply shot the entire center out of the target. The range master took one look at my target, grinned at me and handed me my chit to get the Marksmanship ribbon (now my avatar here on the Forum).

I grew up with my dad's Colt Peacemaker,,,,I never shot any other handguns until I got in the Air Force. Over the years I've owned and shot a lot of different guns...I especially liked the Ruger Security Six and Blackhawks and most 1911s as well as S&w K Frames. I like double action revolvers the most and I shoot better with them than anything else. I'm not a Luddiete when it comes to modern semi-automatics. I have a Glock 22 that I carry in the woods quite a bit or if I go to a big city.

When Army or USMC folks said anything about us carrying 38 Specials we always told them that if General Curtis LeMay wanted us armed he would have given us a tactical nuclear weapon.

Pach grips were good back in the 70s. They were 2-piece, fit very well, and usually had both 'small' and 'large' sizes for the same model gun in their Presentation line. Also cost $7.95, IIRC! As time passed, the fit worsened, the grips took on a "blocky" look, and were mfg'd in one piece. On some models. the grip screws would interfere with the mainspring. Yes, the frame could rust underneath the grip.

Still have those old grips, but the rubber has hardened over the decades and it now hurts to shoot with them. That's age, for you!

Have Pachmayrs on my J frame 36 sq butt and K frame model 15 sq butt. What a difference. Like they were made for my hands.

I've never cared for Pachmayres or any other rubber grips. They work well, but my God most of them are down right UGLY.

If you insist on using any brand of ugly, rubber grips, please remember to remove them every six months or so as they can trap moisture and lead to rusting on the grip frame.

JP@AK-

Did you have to take career field exams that asked questions like, which way does the cylnder turn on the .38 revolver? I guessed left, as the S&W Combat Masterpiece was the official arm, if not yet seen in all units. We also had some Colts.

Another real winner of a question was, Does the Air Policeman park his vehicle ahead of, beside, behind, or to the rear of, an offender's vehicle?

I didn't know if we parked behind or to the rear of the other car, but to the rear of sounded more official, so I chose that and got the question right.

One of my greatest distinctions has been that I passed out of Air Police School as second man in my large class and was cited for academic achievement. I still have that document somewhere.

That and a certificate for winning Second Place in the state's college journalism contest for Critical Review, are my only awards of the kind. (Yes, I did earn that marksmanship ribbon, too.)

Hmmm. Looks as if I win Second Place awards. But my guns are all hand selected for fit and finish, and they are first class items.

I don't remember any field tests of that sort. Maybe that was just an AP thing. Thanks for sharing.

I remember our high school Cross Country Assistant Coach saying, "You are either first or you are zilch." I never quite bought that as true, but I suppose it did help our attitude on the team. We ended up being state champions my junior year.

Congrats on your achievements. For me, coming home in one piece from two tours was achievement enough.

Remember Mershon "10 Point" grips? They were pre-Pachmayrs. I buy them whenever I find them.

I love all the Air Force grip talk. I fought an extended skirmish with the armorer for the 43rd SPS on Guam. I would put Packys on my assigned Model 15, and he would take them off. He said only Emergency Services Team (Air Force SWAT) guys could have them. He was suitably unimpressed with my Lt bars, as the regs were on his side. I finally put some factory target grips on it, and he grudgingly permitted them to stay.

I have a set of pachmeyer rubber presentation grips for all my ccw handguns. I switch to rubber when I ccw carry them, from the ruger security six 357/2 3/4"bbl, to the s&w n frames/ RedHawks. But my ruger SBH 10 1/2" barrel has the larger pachmeyer rubber presentation grips. I can squeeze my fingers into the rubber.

Yes, that test question was on an exam as I studied for my Skliled (77150) rating. It applied only to cops.
