Correct box for a 29-2 nickel ser. n428xxx 1979
Greetings, It`s been a while since my last post. I picked up a nickel S&W 29-2 8 3/8", made in 1979. It didn`t have any box or paperwork with it. I showed it to a S&W collector at a gun show this week, and he stated that a blue cardboard box would be correct for that gun. I mentioned a gray box, and he stated that only the early nickel guns had the gray boxes. I mentioned wooden presentation boxes, and he stated they were just a higher cost option. Like I said, he claims a blue cardboard box would be right for a 1979 29-2 nickel. I`m unsure- what do you folks think? Thanks for your input.......Art.

I believe that at the time of manufacture of your gun, it shipped standard in the mahogany presentation case with the individual tool cutouts and the muzzle facing left. The liners were blue flocked molded polystyrene. The presentation case was not an option at that time.

Your 29-2 most likely dates to late 77 and would have been shipped with a presentation case like the one shown below. The case did not become an option until 1982.

Yes, that is what I thought also, as I have never seen a 29-2 in a box, other than a mahogany one. I asked the dealer if he had a mahogany case, and he said no, but he was willing to sell me a blue cardboard box, hmmm. Thank you very much for your reply, and knowledge.........Art.

Sooo, I went ahead, and bought a presentation box on ebay- not too bad a shape, for $194.00 with shipping. How much does a reflock cost? Can the brittle plastic liner be repaired? I`ve seen several presentation cases, with just the bare wood- no plastic liner, or anything, for sale on ebay, and they sell! Do people make their own liners? Styrofoam? I`m just wondering. Best, Art.
