Unexpected Gifts Today
On my way home from the gun club today, I received a phone call from my father-in-law. A little odd, was afraid something was wrong. He asked me to stop by on my way home, he needed to give me something. James is a retired police chief from a small town in South Carolina. To my surprise, he wanted me to have several of his guns. Two of which are a 4" model 66 and a 2.5" model 66-1. Wow, left me speechless. Grateful!

Congratz!
Your blessed with a father-in-law who must think a lot of you and has given you heirlooms to pass down the line.
Now I'd take him to the steakhouse of his choice and get the low down on the history of those fine S&W's!
GF

Congrats, and I hope you get the story of those revolvers written down for future generations.
Might I also suggest you take a few picture of your FIL with those revolvers, I can think of nothing more appropriate.

My wife got a little misty eyed this evening when she came home and saw them. Apparently the 2.5" was a constant companion of his when she was growing up. Will definitely have to do something to show my gratitude.

When one marries, he often joins the whole family in ways that aren't immediately obvious. You obviously have a good relationship with your F-I-L which I am sure you appreciate. You and he are to both be admired. Congratulations on this latest testament to your relationship, two guns that are (my opinion, at least) arguably the most desirable variants, all the more desirable because of their family history.
Best regards,
Froggie

It's nice that he passed them on to you now. A friend, who recently passed away, passed on his Model 10-8 and Model 37 to me several years ago. At the time he told me his health had deteriorated so much his firearms were more of a liability than a benefit so he wanted me to have them at that time instead of any fighting over things when he passes.
Your wife may be realizing her dad won't be around forever. Take care of her.

He must think you are taking good care of his little girl and has now trusted you with 3 things precious to him.

Yeah, I've got good in-laws, too. My FIL has given me a few of his guns but alas, the only handgun he owns was given to him by me. He has given me a really nice Belgian Browning Light 12 and a minty Winchester Model 63 .22 auto, so I can't really complain. I feel sorry for folks who don't luck into good in-laws. Mine are tops.

Very nice gift! My father-in-law gave me a Model 52-1 EFS for Christmas one year, no extras except the pistol and 3 magazines.

Very nice! I love families that get along like that. I have had three FILs! The first was fine but we didn't live where guns were ever going to be a subject of discussion. The second was fabulous and told me I could have his .30-06 Husqvarna hunting rifle but, sadly, he had to sell it, needing money at a particular time, so that was that. I was very tight with FIL number, we were hunting buddies, and I gave him a gun! Someone stole his car gun and I had a little H&R .22 around that I knew he had seen and liked so I let him have it. He was delighted. I even gave him back his Model 12 20 gauge Winchester after his wild child and I split the sheets - we remained hunting buddies!
I always tell folks I couldn't have been too bad a husband - all my ex-in-laws continued to like me!

Have had 2 Fathers in law. First one, we liked each other, hunted and fished together. Until his daughter and myself divorced. Did end up with a Winchester 94 for a while as one of my daughters inherited it when he passed. She Pawned it to me in a time of need and got it back as a Christmas gift a few yrs ago. Never met my second FIL but he gave me the most precious gift he could give. His beautiful, kind , loving, hardworking daughter who I've been married to for the past 30 years And I thank him every day!!!
