That seems a tad high for the condition you describe, but just a tad... does the seller seem to have any wiggle room?

Also, be sure to check mechanical condition carefully, especially the forcing cone and for any excess looseness in cylinder and crane.

Personally, I would pass. When it looks rough on the outside, what does it look like inside? That is certainly full price for the revolver as described. These are not rare so I would keep looking.

Yes sir, it is a .357 magnum. Unless something is drastically amiss the caliber is marked on the right side of the barrel. Your original post doesn't provide a barrel length. The common ones are 2.5", 4" and 6". The more knowledgeable can expound on which length will garner a premium price. It's usually the shorter more concealable. After it's inception the Model 19 was a workhorse for law enforcement mostly in the 4" variety. Blue or Nickel also makes a difference. Hope this helps, hardcase60

Its a 4" blued. The cosmetics is that the bluing is worn. The gun itself feels quite tight. Barrel and cylinder is clean.

Pictures really help when evaluating finish and overall condition......one man's "rough" is another's "honest wear".....on a 50 year old gun ( your's looks to have been shipped in 1963)..... it's hard not to have muzzle wear, turn line etc... if the gun hasn't spent it's life in a sock drawer!!!!

Bluing is just a form of controlled rust...... and not all that hard to wear off on high spots by the friction from holstering and drawing the gun over the years. .

These days it seems used Smith pricing start in the $500 range.

I agree with Green Frog. A tadpole high but still not a bad deal. If I didn't have a 19-2 I'd pay that for what you described (not sight unseen though).

Had a chat with the seller. I am going to do it for 475. I will post pictures when it comes into my ffl. I saw the 19 at a gun show in another state while out riding. Caught my attention as this is the revolver I was wanting.

I guess hanging at this site got me wanting a Smith revolver. It will be good company for my RIA 1911 and MP 40c.

There is 1 for sale on Armslist near me for asking $400. Looks like 1 of the stocks may be damaged. Rest looks pretty decent. $400 is a great price if all checks out. I DON'T need another K frame magnum. I only mention this gun because I feel that $500 is somewhat high by your description. Let us know how you make out. Bob

So long as it's not pitted, and the stocks aren't chipped up, assuming good mechanical condition the $475 is probably an ok price. Not a smokin' deal, but you're not being robbed either.

Here are some pictures from the seller of the gun. The bluing is much darker than what the pictures show. I think maybe a flash? When I get it I will update the pictures.

I'd pay 475-500 for that all day long, especially with the diamond target grips. Those are pretty pricey on their own. (Assuming good mechanical condition of course) Around here the really nice ones go for $650-700 and up.

Sure, you might find one for less, but I'll bet you'd look long and hard to find it.

Personally I would not pay more than $350 - $375. I'd rather pony up a little more and get a purdy one. That's just me of course and YMMV.

I think you done good! 19s, of any kind, may be common in other parts of the county, but in these parts, not so much. Last one I saw, outside of at a gun show, was priced at 8 bills and it was a 6" and while the finish was very nice, it had been Magnaported. It didn't last long even at that price.

Clean it up and shoot the snot out of it. I avoid shooting hot 125s in mine but do occasion shoot hot 140s and 158s but mostly it gets 38 spcs. I have Ns & Ls for hot stuff.

I picked it up Monday. I know I should have cleaned it up before going to the range but just couldn't wait. I have not shot many revolvers and had a box 38 specials 138 grain Winchester white box. Within a couple of shots I was dead on the target at 10 yards. I then went out to 25 yards and was soon hitting the target. Most of this was shooting single action. I can shoot this gun way better than my 1911 GI (which I felt was great) and MP40c.

So far very happy!

I also really love the model 19. Now that you have it, and it's a shooter, take that baby out and shoot anything you like. That's the one nice thing about having a hawgleg that's worn. You don't have to treat it like fine crystal.

It looks like it has huge holster wear from the end of the barrel and the end of the cylinder. I would have to think it was a "duty carry" during its lifetime. That normally means really rough outside, but can be squeaky clean inside.

If I saw that 19 for sale at 475, it would go home with me! I have several 357's and there's always room for one more.

The stocks are worth $150 by them self....you did good!

This site will do that to you. Be careful or you'll end up like many of us with enough guns that you have to start using a spreadsheet to keep track of them all...

BTW - congrats on the 19-2. I will also let you know that the Combat Magnums are like potato chips - once you open a bag you cannot stop at just one... So many different variations (barrel lengths, finish, engineering changes, commemoratives...).

Make sure you keep it coated with a CLP or similar. If not, those finish challenged areas will develop surface rust again. It appears as if it already had a slight bout of that on the right side. That's the only bad thing about blue worn guns.

I think you did just fine at $475. That would actually be a pretty good deal in my neck of the woods.

My 19 no dash is in very comparable condition, without those nice original target stocks. It came with a set of Pachmayr decelerators instead, and I paid $450 for it.

I am with those who say you got a decent deal. Like stated the stocks are worth $150. You have got a gun you can carry around and not worry about. Keep it clean and give it a wipe down with a slightly oiled rag once in a while and enjoy it.
Unless you own a pawnshop where broke people come in needing money your not going to find many of the earlier model 19s for less money. I go around Montana and always check gun shops and Pawn shops. I own the only model 19 I have found for $500 and it was marked 6

Even when I lived in a much more humid area than I do currently ( our current monsoon season not withstanding) I have never had issue with my finish worn guns ( most of the guns I own are well worn working guns!) developing rust. Even a well worn snub I ankle carried ( often in calf deep or deeper snow) never had a rust issue.
