Default Diamond Grip Question

Hi
I recently picked these grips up at a gun show and they were tagged as K/L frame grips. I was looking for a set for my N frame mod 28 and thought for sure they were marked wrong but sure enough they did not fit albeit they almost seemed to. My question is are K/L frame grips really a close fit to N frame revolvers as I do not own a K frame or the like. Any info would be much appreciated. Would these be square butt? I am thinking of selling or trading for N square grips but would like to know what they are as not to advertise them incorrectly
Thank you !

First off... those are some very uncommon diamond target grips with them not having the extractor relief cutout on the left grip... they were made for only a couple of years in the early '50's and usually sell for a premium... in their condition, could easily command $200 due to scarceness.

Yes, they are square butt.

No, I wouldn't call them a close fit on an N-Frame, the rear "horn" of those grips leave about 1/8" of the frame exposed, to me it looks like the grips are broken.

Thank you for replying, I had no idea they were that old. From researching on this forum I only figured pre 1969 because of the black washers but I couldnt leave them at the gunshow either way. Appreciate the info!

I don't want to be contrarian, but I believe Gunhacker has underestimated the market price for non-relieved K frame target stocks. I've seen them sell for double the amount he mentioned. If I were selling them, I'd ask $300 at the very minimum and would probably hold out for more. Nice examples are difficult to find for sale. You should be able to sell those for enough to pick up some proper N frame targets and have money left over (assuming you don't need Cokes, which you shouldn't for your Highway Patrolman).

Also, I understand why you talked about K/L stocks, but keep in mind that diamond stocks went away a dozen years before any L frame models were on the market.

Wow! Again I had no idea. They certainly are not in excellent condition though. I would say fair to good at best. They are chipped on one side on the high corner and could use a good cleaning. Like I said Im no expert and just wanted to know more about them as I was looking to replace the magnas on my 1979 mod 28 with some targets and came across these. I really appreciate all this information. I would like to sell them but need to know all I can before listing.

Based on the condition of the stocks (chips and dings), I think $200 would be the maximum price. This style of stocks first appeared around 1950 and were made through at least 1955 or early 1956.

Having seen the added photos, I have to agree with Doc44. Sorry.

If your Model 28 is from 1979 you don't need diamond stocks and non diamond will be cheaper and easier to find. Diamonds went away approx. 1968-69.

I would have no problem putting any type of original target grips on the mod 28, I would prefer the right type obviously so I appreciate the date info on the diamond k frames. Im hoping it might be easy to trade these for the ones I need. I may put them up for sale for less than they may be worth just to help someone with a 50's revolver who needs them. Like the pictures show they arent in great condition but if an older k frame has the right patina they would be perfect.

Default Stocks

More than likely your model 28 would have shipped with Magna stocks rather than the target style.

If the larger target stocks feel "right" then by all means get a set (non-dia).

I like targets but magnas with a tyler just seem at home on a 4" 28.
