Default Model 66-1 round to square butt

I just picked up a Model 66-1 at the show today. It has a round butt and I like a square butt. Can I change out the grips to the bigger square butt grips? Any recommendations? I will shoot this on a regular basis and don't want to spend more money on grips than the gun.
Thanks in advance and I apologize if this posts twice. Thought I posted earlier today and can't find it.

Raphael

Welcome to the Forum.

Yes, you can buy RB to SQ grips for your K frame M66.

Welcome to the Forum! Kim Ahrend, Hogue, Altamont, to name a few. I just put a set of Herrett R.B. Targets on my 66-2. Ebay, is a good place to look. Of you can find them here at times also. Bob

Since S&W now only produces round butt revolvers, conversion grips are commonly used for those prefering larger square butts.

Not round to square, but a little bigger around at the base than some of the others. Many like magna style stocks with a grip adapter. Tried this combo on a few guns. Don't really like it. Bob

Here's a pic of my 66-4 with Ahrends round to square conversion retro combats in cocobolo......

I sometimes swap these out with the Spegel's on my 19-5, also in cocobolo.....

The Ahrends are definitely chunkier but both feel great in hand at the range.

That being said, the Ahrends Retro Combats would be a good choice.

Consider looking to "Gripseller" on eB** who oftentimes has a wide selection of Ahrends grips available without the wait.

Also, watch the Sales Forum as these crop up periodically - that's how I got mine (and the Spegels).....

Herrett grips cover the backstop, which makes the reach too long for my "medium" hands and DA shooting. I prefer Ahrends grips over those by Hogue, since they are wider (less felt recoil) and promote a higher grip than the Hogue "bulge."

Ahrends has four styles of round-to-square grips - target (flat front, no finger grooves), retro target (round front), combat (flat front, finger grooves) and retro-combat (round front, finger grooves).

Standard Ahrends grips have a flat front strap, which I feel improves indexing. Retro grips have a rounded front strap, similar to S&W grips, but less tapered toward the butt, and fit the hand very comfortably. The left grip is relieved for use with a speed loader.

I prefer round grips for conceivability and square grips for target. I use "boot" grips for barrels 3" or less, and "banana" or square grips for 4" and longer.

Love them! I am working on ordering a set of Ahrends. Called this morning, got machine. Sent email, waiting for a reply. Cocobolo no longer available according to website. Looking at Padauk in the S&W retro grips.

Might look for a set of older "K-frame round butt target grips".....aka .... "banana" grips....longer than the grip frame and thicker.

The checkered K frame RB Target grips aka bananas are what I have on my 3" 66-2 and 2 1/2" 686-4

I don't have what would be considered a large hand, just very long fingers

Those look so much better than the ugly Hogue rubber grips.
