Default requesting advice on possible trade.....

There's a very clean 4" S&W Model 28 Highway Patrolman .357 for sale locally, from a good guy that I've dealt with before. We're negotiating over my offer of a clean Springfield Mil-Spec stainless 1911 (NM serial number), with factory case, docs, mags, spare grips, plus a pretty slick set of G10 grips, 3 more top-quality stainless mags, and 250 rounds of ammo.
The 1911 is in very good condition, and has run 100% flawlessly through 900 rounds of everything imaginable, and it is a straight-up FANTASTIC shooter, that I'm quite fond of (my best shooting buddy concurs that this is a real sweetie).
But, I've been hankering for another old Model 28 since trading a rough one away several years back, and I know they ain't making any more, and they're steadily going up, yadda yadda.
He's asking $675, and $750 trade value, which from what I see is at the very upper edge of realistic fair market value. These stainless Springer Mil-spec 1911's, if they're even in stock, run just under $700 (after transfer or tax), and I'm tossing in a good $200 in mags, grips and ammo.
What's y'alls take on this deal?

Well, a quick check of the market for Model 28s would uncover the fact that he is in the ballpark and presuming the ballpark is what you say it is for the Springfield (with my having no clue what a transfer tax is since there are none here) and the accoutrement it all sounds fair to me.

If it was a model 27, then I probably would but not for a 28. IMHO

I'm not sure I understand what he's "asking"........

But; according to the SCS&W 4th ED. a Model 28 in "excellent" condition would be worth $700....... " very good" $575

No dash add a 30% premium

28-1 big bucks ( only a couple have been reported)

Here in W. Pa. a excellent 4" 28-2.......LGS market price $600-650......... could be had for $600 OTD

On trade at a LGS; $450-500max IMO

I know, I already stipulated that. "...(it is) at the very upper edge of realistic fair market value."

I never said "transfer tax". What I actually said was: "These stainless Springer Mil-spec 1911's.... run just under $700 (after transfer or tax)..."

I don't understand what you "don't understand" . He's trying to sell or trade the pistol, so he's asking $675 cash, or $750 trade value (or "TV" as it is often written on the classifed sites).

LOL...... I don't understand.... why he thinks it has a higher "TV" than it's cash value?????

If he sold it to someone else..... and brought you the $675: would that $675 be worth $750.

Good point, I never quite got that either, but it's extremely common on all the classfied sites for the "TV" to be higher than the selling price, so I didn't give it a second thought.

I figure l'm going to loose money on every gun deal, so I'd push the trade. You can always buy another 1911, clean 4" model 28s are few and far between in my neck of the woods.

IMHO the "trade value" is too high by $100

To me, the model 28 seems overvalued and when you throw in the extras the value gets even more stacked in the owner's favor. Nice HPs are in the $550-600 range with careful shopping and quick reaction times online .

Yeah, I concur. GB has a bunch of 28's in this price range, the vast majority with zero bids.
Anyway, I decided I was going to at least go take a look, (since this was only a tentative deal on both parts), but when I was digging up all the stuff, I couldn't find one of the mags I was supossed to have (Wilson 7 rounder), and since I was already on the fence, I took that as an omen to scratch the whole thing.
I already have a couple shiny old Smith wheelguns, one more or less didn't much matter. This is my only 45, and I've accumulated a stash of ammo, mags, parts, grips, rebuild kit, and I really would've hated seeing it go.
So it's all good. Thanks again to all for weighing in......

He has something you want.
You have something relatively common to find.

I wouldn't let a few dollars stand between myself and the deal.

I may have missed it. Are stocks on the 28 factory? IF you wanted another 1911, could you get a deal on a good 1? I bought a S&W 1911 as new in box, 12/15 for $625. (I know it is not the same gun). Will the trade make you happy? You have to make the decision. I have a 6" no dash. Have no intentions of letting it go. Wish I had a 4 incher also. Bob

Default my 2 Cents

Just a rhetorical question.
Why not just buy the MDL 28 outright.
Keep the 1911.
I know that's not always possible, but...........

What does the NM serial number mean? I can't find a straight answer with a quick google search. Assembled in USA or Frame made in USA?

I'd try to find another 28 for cheaper somewhere else. You know as soon as you buy it someone here will be telling you about the one he got for $300 from his neighbor's sister's mechanic.

I'd rather have the 28 so I'd do it. I agree trade value is too high.

I don't know why people put value on the NM. Wether it's all Brazil, all US or 50/50 the quality is the same

Pretty simple, cash is cash but sellers usually figure traders will try to make a profit on something they already have, and there is no way to tell how much you have in the item that is going toward the trade.

But both items have a Fair market value ( within a range). If he bought that 28 10-15 years ago he might only have $300-400 in it.......isn't he making a "profit" at $675. Which number is FMV for the 28? What OP has in his Springfield is irrelevant..... what's it's FMV today?

As stated above $675 is high for a 28 in my local market ....and yours MD.

I think the seller will overvalue what he has in his item, and figures the buyer will too, so everything will come out even.

Agree on the 28 being too high.

The three 'quality' mags, grips, and ammo account for at least $200. I would keep them and swap gun for gun if I had to have that particular M28. You will miss the 1911 and will end up with another.

You are wanting something that is not being made now for something that is... so, the values are close enough for a swap. But, I don't care for deals that have different cash and trade prices...

Who wants what more? YOU - his Mod 28 or HIM - your Springer? Who is in the better bargaining position?

I was on the fence when I first started looking at 1911s. The shop had a Colt ANVIII for (what I later found out was an unbelievable price) and a Springer GI for a few hundred less. Clerk was really pushing the Springfield. I held it, I liked it, price was great. Then I looked down at the pattern of the iconic U.S. Military sidearm and see the phrase "Made In Brazil" stamped on the frame.

I love that Colt!

And the Springfield is used by the FBI SRT teams.

For me, I just wanted something that's more than just range reliable. Don't care who makes it
