Checkered Topstraps - Not 357's RANGE REPORT
Added 27May:
I was able to get out to the range with the 27-2. Both 45's shot great. The 45 Colt is a bit of a cannon out of the 4" barrel. There was a tiny bit of jacket shavings on the table after shooting 45ACP. I think both 27's will be wearing Thai stocks for the time being, though the set with finger grooves may end up working better on the 44mag.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Just picked up another Model 27, this one a -2 to go along with my other 27, a -5.
Except they're both far from original.
Both are cut to 4". The 1955/27-2 came with 45ACP and 45LC cylinders. The LC cylinder is recessed and the ACP cylinder looks shaved for moon clips.
Not sure who did the work on either but now I have 3 checkered topstraps and 6 different cartridge options between them.

My new 27-2 with too much top strap checkering on an 8 3/8's" barrel to get it all in the picture.

Since we are playing show and tell:
Here is a .357 Magnum from 1952:
Here's a Model 27-2 5" (sorry, no picture of the top but you can see the checkering a little bit):
For contrast, here is a Model 24 with the Plain Jane top strap:

Checkered top straps come in interesting calibers after the the imaginations of creative men take hold. Witness the Registered checkered topstrap 44 Special created by Keith44... now THAT'S a special Special!

You need a better thread title Lloyd17, I almost overlooked this gem.

Affirm. A 27-5 with a 44Mag barrel attached. I bought it as a barreled frame missing a few pieces. I need to get it to a pro to fit up a yoke and cylinder to finish it off.

I've read through that thread many times. That is a beautiful piece. I'll be leaving my RM alone, but these later 27's will be nice additions to the big bore part of the accumulation.

I own two model 27 a -2 & -6 and have noticed the checkering is not so sharp of the checkering on newer ones, in pictures, here on this forum?

Nice pair!
I sure would like to see the rear face of the .45 Colt cylinder, while installed, mebbe two shots, cylinder opened and cylinder closed.

The first two without empties and the next two with. Is that what you're looking for?
Both cylinders lock up solid and the action feels really nice. I actually was surprised by the short action as I'm used to the pre-war long action.

Thanks. I was wondering how the gunsmith dealt with the rear of the cylinders, the cylinder stop lug in the frame and all that.
Looks like the gunsmith used the longer cylinders of the .41 and .44 Magnums and bored them to ACP and Colt chamberings?

Measured the cylinders today. The 45ACP is 1.537 which is right in line with what the SCSW says a 1955 45ACP should be. The 45LC measures 1.625 which I couldn't figure find in the SCSW as a cylinder measurement. My pre-23 is 1.575 and a later 629 cylinder is 1.710.
Edit: Just looked again and the M27 recessed cylinder measured 1.62 so it looks like this was a 27 cylinder bored to accept 45LC.

Kinda/sorta--a converted M28 now in .45 Colt that I built many years ago. I guess I decided to checker the barrel rib after finding a M27 rear sight!

I think we need a picture of a nickel 27-2 top strap from a 3 1/2 incher. They are very cool.
Of course, a blued 5 incher is no slouch either!

I have a pre war OD I'm seriously considering turning into a 5" 44spl. Checkering would put it over the top.
