Going to begin my search today. There are a couple of pawn shops not too far from my house that always seem to have some older revolvers on hand. I'll probably hit them up and see what they have and see if there is anything that grabs my attention and see if there are any deals to be had.

Well, probably not a surprise but there were no gems or diamonds in the rough to be found at the pawn shops. I think the "mystery" revolver that I posted a link to earlier in this thread was a victory model as the serial number started with a "V". The nickel finish was very nice but I'm somewhat certain it was likely refinished at some point and the grips looked like well weathered broom handles. They had a couple of other S&W revolvers but nothing that really caught my eye or was priced right.

Oddly enough, they did have a nice little Charter Arms Undercover that kind of intrigued me. It was an early model marked Bridgeport, Connecticut with a three inch barrel chambered in 38 Special. The finish was pretty close to perfect- no turn line, zero holster wear, and only some very light surface rust on the front sight blade that would likely clean right up. Their asking price was $179 but I bet I could talk them down with cash. The three inch barrel and the fact that it is in almost new condition and likely made in the late 60's or early 70's is what I like the most about it. Not really how I was planning on starting my S&W collection but if it's still there next weekend and I can get it out the door for around $150 I might just pick it up because I think it's neat.

In that condition and at that price I'd go for the CA Undercover too - especially if my "collection" didn't already include a couple of short-barreled revolvers. I picked up a more "finish challenged" Bulldog from the same era (Bridgeport marked) for $185 OTD and it has been a great CCW. Not S&W quality, but About the weight of an all-steel J-frame, and just a touch larger, but packing 5 rounds of 44 special. Decent trigger in SA & DA, reasonably good fit and finish, accuracy that is comparable to other 2 & 3 inch revolvers, and a real bargain price. What's not to like about any of that?!?
