Default What do I have here?

This was given to me by my father. Doesn't seem to have a model stamped on it. 38 special.

It is a Military & Police .38 Hand Ejector from when guns had names instead of numbers. A "pre-Model 10" if you like.

Looks to be a M&P .38 S&W Special post WWII. Look on the bottom of the grip for the serial#. Should be a letter followed by numbers. S or C maybe. Some refer to them as pre Model 10

If that's the yoke, it's not the serial number. As said above, the serial will be on the bottom of the grip frame.

Being a '4-screw', post-war short action, and pre-model number, production would have been circa 1958 give or take a year. Serial number will start with a 'C'.

Here is a post with ID information and where to find it:

To IDENTIFY your Gun >

Without the upper sideplate screw and no model stamp, Chris has the time frame correct. Not long after this the .38 Military & Police was given the extra designation of model 10.

With the features shown in the first picture, it will have a C prefix and shipping could be anywhere from mid-year 1956 to early 1958. The top sideplate screw was eliminated in 1956 and the model numbered guns started shipping in 1958, but not necessarily in January.
