28-2 questions.
What can you fine folks tell me about a 28-2 N159xx? What grips would be correct. How common. Thanks

The year it shipped would be somewhere between '70 and '72, per the SCoS&W. Stocks would be non-diamond magnas or non-diamond Target Stocks with the extractor cutout (Commonly called "Football Targets" due to the shape of the cutout). These are not rare. The four inch barrel seems to be more popular with buyers right now.

I'll go out on a limb and say that the majority of 4" HP revolvers of the 28-2 variety shipped with Magna stocks, not targets.

Think that was a pretty common substitution on HP's in the 70s and 80s.......besides the Prima Ballerina was the Model 27. thou she's a bit heavy for the "lifts"

I must demur ...
For one thing, to me at least, magnas are undersized for an N-Frame. They look out of proportion. Functionally, they are too small, for my hands at least. I require a grip adapter at a minimum. Better still, larger stocks / grips.
Pachs fit my hand better. I like the good solid gripping surface as well. Then on the subject of appearance, I like their rough and ready, all business looks. They are reminiscent of the hard rubber stocks on revolvers back in the early days of the last century. That's what I think anyways!

Maybe no one took her to the prom, but I sure would want her around when the chips are down ...

Totally agree. For me, the magna grips suck unless a grip adapter is used.

Here is my 28-2 with numbers matching magnas. I now have a period correct Tyler T Grip on it, and like it a lot. Some of you guys may remember the work that I put into rehabbing it in a thread last year. It is a great gun....and I prefer the look of the factory stocks:
By the way, this one is Serial N79XX, and dates to 1970.
Best Regards, Les

Rubber versus factory wood stocks... I would not be the first or last member on this site to confess to removing the factory stocks and swapping out for Pachmayrs or Hogues for the range trip, only to put the wood back on after clean-up and locking it back up in the safe.

I do like the magna stock look on K & N frames, but with a size 20 ring finger, and hands like an ape, they just don't work for me. When I first started in law enforcement, put a real pretty pair of Herrett's custom walnut grips on my 586. Very classy. The first time I had to roll around on the ground, chipped and scratched the heck out of them. Rubber from then on for serious using guns.

What he said about magnas and fit for me too. An option I like is Herrett Target Stocks. My 1960, no dash. Bob

Not much of a fan of the magnas at all. My 28 came with rubber grips, and I bought a set of target grips from a pawnshop. I sure wish I hadn't sold that 28, it was one of the early 28's, and had a great trigger.

I'm the guy who frequently comes on and preaches about making your gun... well, your gun. Regardless of what everyone else says/thinks, at the end of the day (or at the beginning of a string) you've got to make the gun comfortable for yourself, and if a particular set of grips works for you, so be it!
That said, I personally HATE the feel of all rubber grips! they don't work for my hands, and with large frame guns like my 29-2 grip back on my hand so hard they tend to take the skin off of my palm! Friend Dale53 and I have gone round and round on this and have just had to agree to disagree, since his experience is the direct opposite of mine.
One of the first 44 Magnums I ever shot ( a 4 screw) had service (or magna) grips with an original Tyler T-grip adaptor and like Goldilocks, I found it to be just right. For K-frame guns, smooth combats give the best feel for me, regardless of barrel length, vintage, etc. Otherwise, I need a set of custom targets. The little I- and J-frames are so small that if I want to carry them concealed as intended, I just have to adapt to the relatively small grips that are proportional to the frame sizes. Fortunately I get enough trigger time with them that this is no problem.
I've gone through all of this litany because I'm still drinking my first cup of coffee for the morning and because I strongly feel that stocks/grips, like the rest of a revolver, are subject to intense personal preference and if someone is going to actually shoot their gun should be the ones that actually satisfy the shooter. Rant over!
Froggie

Yes its very hard to improve on the Magna grips, unless of course we go to real "stags", and then you have N-Frame nirvana! well maybe ivory's, LOL!
