Which One Would You Buy?
Two guns are up for sale locally (different sellers). Both have the same asking price, $475, both snubs, both pinned, both in good condition. Not sure which one to try for, I can only afford one.
First is a Model 36 no dash in nickel, the other is a Model 10-5 blue snubby. Opinions?
Here are the sellers pictures.

I am also tempted buy a nice condition 6" pre-model Highway Patrolman with original grips for $550.

That's almost a tie, but only because the M36 is nickel. Look at both of them in person. If condition is high on both, flip a coin.

Are you saying buy one of the thee or are you saying buy the pre-model 28 and one of the snubs?
I would check the nickel Model 36 to ensure it has an "N" stamp under the barrel or on the grip frame under the stocks prior to considering it. I do like the blued finish on the -5 in the picture. I would probably go with the 10-5 if it is 2 out of 3.
If it is a choice of one of the three, I would choose the pre 28 or highway patrolman.

That 10-5 looks nice. But a pre-28 for $550 would win me over.

My vote would be for the Highway Patrolman. Think about it, how often do you see a pre model marked Highway Patrolman. I've seen two in 30 years, and neither was for sale. $550 is a good price for any decent Model 28, but it's a really good deal on a pre 28.
If it was me I'd get the Highway Patrolman and the 10-5. I'm not really that into nickel guns, and Highway Patrolmen and 10-5's are among my favorite revolvers. I'd buy both even if I couldn't afford, which may explain the state of my bank account.

I absolutely do not care for snubs in any way. It seems like after 30 years of handgunning, much of it with S&W wheelguns but more pistols in the last decade... I am never going to find any love for a snub revolver.
So then it comes down to J-frame versus K-frame hahaha, way too easy: K-frame all the way and it isn't even close.
And if you strip away all of -MY- personal ideas of the two options you will easily find that snub 36's are as common as they get... a snubby Model 10 almost seems rare in comparison.

Oops, should have read post#2 before replying.
I have two six-inch 28-2's and I own the perfect number of snubs & J-frames, zero. So I agree with most everyone else, the pre-28 is the gem in this race.

Sold the 6" 28, now if it was a 4" 28, that's a horse of a different color!
A "J" frame nickel doesn't show up that much and be more interesting to me.

2) 10 snub
3) nickel 36
My opinion.

The 36 does have an N on the cylinder.

The pre-28 is the only one of the three that is a target gun and I'm a target shoots so it would be the obvious choice for me.
However, if you must supply your own concealment .38 for a job or do not give a hoot about precision target shooting then do not let the big revolver get in your way. The choice between the Model 36 and Model 10 is whether you prioritize concealment or ease of hitting. Also the Model 36 is not factory approved for .38 Special +P. The Model 10 would be expected to last longer firing thousands of +P. Its recoil would also be more comfortable.

The 28s are just too heavy for me -- and 6" to boot. No I'd pass. I would get the snubbie Model if only because I see them so rarely.

The pre-M28 is the best value.
I DO like nickle revolvers , but comes down to your preference in snubs. If primary purpose is carry in pocket, or on ankle, then that's J frame niche. K frame snubs give great balance and control, practical accuraccy overlapping 4in guns, and surprisingly concealable with stock or boot grips ( prerequisite of proper belt).
Yes, I am a fan of 2in K frames.

Took my model 65-2 to the range today. Reminded me again how much I love shooting .357 magnum. One of my other favorite guns is my only N frame, a Brazilian model 1917. What would be those two guns combined? The Highway Patrolman, I guess my guns answered my question.
Thank you so much for the help everyone!

which one
I bought a nickel 36 at the end of last year for $350, looked brand new. 28's are upwards of $650 and higher in my area. My 2 cents would be get the pre 28.

As to first question, the Model 10.
Second question, I just personally find the Model 28/27 to be clunkers.

If it were me....
N frame pre Mod 28
K frame M10
J frame M36
Why?
The J frame is nickle....not my style.
The K frame M10....back in the day they were all over the place. I'd probably run into another someday.
The N frame pre Mod 28....now that interests me.

All personal preferences aside (that's why they make chocolate, vanilla and strawberry ice cream), decide what you want to do with the revolver. Are you looking to fill a hole in a collection/accumulation? Have you been lusting for one longer than another? Based on the photos and given that all three are mechanically equal then which is the best use of the monies? Right now, in any market, IMHO it would be the pre-28. Best of luck. hardcase60

If I could only afford to buy one I would get the 28. Then I'd steal my grandmothers prescription money to get the 10.
No I'm just kidding about that last part, seriously.

Luckily the guns are still available. Though I am holding off for a few days as I got wind of a possible model 547 for sale. My husband's coworker said her grandmother has one she doesn't want. I really hope it works out. That is one of my grail guns.

The correct answer is to purchase all three.
If you can only purchase one, I'd get the N frame HP
If two, the HP and the Md 10
But again, the correct answer is to purchase all three (did you really expect any other answer here?)!

Pre 28 defiantly. Unless you really need a carry gun then go with the 36.
