Default Model 14-4 Date/Grip Question

I'm original owner of 24K1038. I'm posting here only because I'm guessing it was made possibly before 1980? Besides liking to have a more accurate idea on when it shipped I was interested to know which target stocks would be correct. It came with Magna's and I just replaced them for the pictured targets. Was I correct to get this style of relief as opposed to the speed loader relief?

Naturally, I'm keeping the Magna's but the targets were a must for me for more accurate shooting.

It is likely a late 1977 production gun, but it probably didn't make it to your dealer at least until 1978. The Target stocks on it are correct; the "speedloader" cutout style didn't start until the early '80s. Thank you for taking good care of your guns .

Thanks Murphydog! I bought it from little sporting goods store on Main Street, in the center of town, in Lewistown, MT. It would have been between 1980 and 1982. And I picked it over any other S&W they had in the display case because I wanted a "match" for the 1948 K22 my Dad had given to me.

Not sure why I started doubting myself on those targets but I'm sure happy they're period correct. Too much money not to be "right".

Thanks again!
Eric

That's a beautiful 14-4 you have there. I have one with a 22k serial number from 1977 that came with those "football" target stocks originally. I have a 33k serial number 17-4 from 1978 that came with the speedloader relief target stocks originally.

Made in 1978. The 24K numbers for that year ran from 24K1 to 24K6700. Then, 24K6701 to 24K9999 were issued in 1979.

The target stocks with the football relief are period-correct for your Model 14-4.

I purchased this 14-4 brand new. It is an 88K gun, made in 1980, and came from the factory with the stocks you see on it. The speed loader cut started about that time (1979-80) on the K target frame guns.

Nice 14 you have there! Mine is a little earlier than yours. 1977 -3. I think that 14's are under-rated! (not that it matters) Bob
