10-7 pencil barrel
Saw one today in good condition. Nothing amazing but not beat up. Looks like it was an issued gun in some department and has some bluing wear on the barrel but not the cylinder.
It is a 10-7 which to me means late 70s production but there is no barrel pin. Is that weird?

Does it have a three letter prefix serial number?

I have a nickel 10-7 (4" standard barrel) made in 1979 and it has a pinned barrel. S&W stopped pinning barrels in 1982.

The standard barrel 10-7 was made into the unpinned barrel era. Only weird if you were expecting to see the pin .

I was. As I understand it 10-8 was made in the late 70s as well so wouldn't it be made into the unpinned era? Or did they make both -7 and -8 side by side?

10-7 and 10-8 were produced concurrently.
10-7 is the standard barrel profile.
10-8 is the heavy barrel version.

That's why I was asking about the three letter prefix. Both it and the unpinned barrel debuted in 1982. 10-9 replaced the 10-7 not the 10-8 (as explained above).
