M-58 questions
This last weekend I picked up a really nice M-58 at a local show. Paid more than I wanted($850). Really nice condition. Serial is in the N1512XX range. No original stocks but it has TT and TH. The Herretts on it look nice but in y'alls opinion..would this one have had Target stocks to compliment the TT TH or Magnas? I want to put the correct stocks on. The gun is otherwise about 97-98%.. Oh would someone have an approximate date for shipping. I can post a pic or two after the camera charges up

The Model 58 typically ships with the standard/ service width hammer and trigger and a fairly hard to find and pricey set of "plain clothes" PC Magnas number to the gun. The target upgrades were most likely added after the fact by the last owner. The hammer and trigger wouldn't be tough to find and replace if you want to make it original.
Rough estimate on the shipping date be '73-'74. I dont have my SWSC in front of me though...

I don't think there is any way of knowing for sure without the box or a letter.
The Target hammer and trigger could have easily been changed to suit the shooter. I believe at minimum most shipped with the modified magnas.

Catalog says 1973 for that serial number. It would (as others have said) be odd for this to have been shipped with a target trigger and target hammer, but not impossible.

I did have a chance to buy one of these many years ago for a then cheap price NIB...with TT TH TS. I kinda wish I had bought it. But have also seen others with TT and TH in the past. Original or not I don't know. The condition of this one is such that I think they may be original to the gun. If someone changed them out they certainly didn't shoot it enough to make it worthwhile. Just an observation but y'all are the experts in such matters. I surely am not. Another thing that may weigh in favor of magna stocks. The serial number of the gun is not stamped inside the crane. Only on the butt of the gun. Attached a couple of pics. The smooth Herrett stocks feel good but we'll see how they are after I shoot it. I know I have a couple pair of Targets and may have a pair of N frame magnas.

You know Skeet, at $850. you are not out of line on the purchase price.
Yes, that is a lot of cake, but sounds like a nice gun for that price.
Lust enjoy it. Best

I also have a 57 from 65 I think. S serial anyway. It is not in as nice condition as this 58. I bought the 58 to carry in Elk/Grizz country. No sights to hang up on my coat pocket. I shot the 58 today with my grizz loads. I am going to put a set of magnas on it. Those smooth Herretts slip slide around a bit. I also like the 41.I even have a Marlin 1894 41 mag. Hardly ever shoot it so it may have to go. I did good this weekend getting a nice shooter grade 19-4 with TT TH but magna stocks for 350. I guess I did ok on the 58..Glad I got it. This is a heavy gun to carry in a shoulder rig though. .

My 58 was stock when I bought it used. Still tight with slight muzzle wear. Found the proper PC Diamond Magnas from another forum member. Shoot it regularly with 5.5 grains of Titegroup over 215 LSWC's. Like shooting a heavy barrel Model 10 with standard velocity loads.

Neat..never have used tightgroup(I do have some). I figured on trying some AA2 or Bullseye with cast bullets

Skeeter, that is a good, fair price you paid. The Model 58 is one big chunk of solid revolver. Perfect for your intended use.
I bought my Model 58 NIB in August, 1978. List cost was $183.75 with about a 6% sales tax included. I never intended to shoot it as a .41. My gunsmith was going to convert it into a .45 Colt. I had already bought a new S&W 1955 Target barrel and was saving up the gunsmithing fees.
Then, S&W was rumored to soon be releasing a standard production, cataloged .45 Colt, a twin to it's Model 29 and 57. So, the new Model 58 was kept in it's then current state, where other than a few wear marks from a little shooting, it remains.

I just picked up a model 58 for $700 from the man who bought it new in the late '60's. It had been packed for years, but fired less a 100 rounds with blueing about 80% and the original magnas roughed up a little, but almost no turn ring. I think for the condition of yours $850 is a good deal.
I have been shooting it with 240gr. SWC FB from Rim Rock and it shoots to a nice 6 o'clock hold with this bullet over 8.5gr. of Winchester WSF. I haven't had a chance to shoot this load over my chrono yet. I also have a M57 with 8 3/8" barrel. I just love this m58 and the .41 mag!

Groo here
I got a 58 nickle the came with smooth Magna grips.
It is a chunk of steel and has an air of competence about it.
My load is 215 gr cast SWC with 6 gr trailboss[Lee dipper]
Win LP primer and a heavy crimp [ always use a medum
to heavy crimp]

Nice looking gun.... I have a set of grips like that on a 57 and they shoot nice for me....
I've seen at least three boxed 58s that had TT/TH from the factory....there was one posted here last year I think... So it is quite possible that your are original factory installed parts.
If you have not seen this thread you may want to post your gun here also...
The 'unofficial' 58 Club
If you are looking for a very accurate handload that duplicastes to original Remington and Winchester 210 lead SWC Police load try 8.0 grains of Unique..****ns right at 950 from a 4" barrel.
Lots of good links and information on this post...
.41 Magnum / 41 Special Load Data Center
The Marlins are great lever guns... Depending on the model and condition they were bringing $1400-2500.... Now that Henry has their guns available for $650 I have recently seen Marlins for under a grand...
...and serial numbers for the 58 were only stamped on the bottom of the butt for some reason...

This I did not know. Wonder why ?? Thanks for the links. I somewhere have some articles on the 41 Special by Rocky Rabb. I think he even had an article in a Gun Digest or a Reloaders Digest. Going to look 'em up
