29-2 nickel question on finish
This 29-2 looks unfired but previous owner cycled it a few times, can these be polished out or best to leave it alone? This one I bought from a collectors estate for 600.00.

Why would yo want to polish it out?
It looks fine the way that it is. A nice buy for six bills BTW.

If that beautiful M29 were mine I would love it to the moon and back. Then I'd shoot it, a lot. And then I'd clean it, a lot.
I'm not a collector by any means but the guns that I buy for myself are for the enjoyment of shooting them. I prefer high condition S&W revolvers but I hate to think that they will just sit in a safe, not to see the light of day.
Love 'em, shoot 'em, clean them up and love 'em again.
That's my perspective, its your gun.

You stole that beautiful 29 at $600 man. One in that condition could easily go for 3 times that much on Gunbroker.
If you want to give it a good cleaning and polishing, you can use some Flitz on a soft cotton cloth to polish it up a bit and then follow that up with a good coat of Renaissance Wax to protect the finish. Flitz won't hurt nickel, but I wouldn't try it on a blued gun as I am sure it would remove the blue finish. I have used Flitz on my nickel model 27's with no problems though. You won't be able to polish out the turn line though, but that doesn't matter anyways as all Smith revolvers will have some kind of turn line, if from nothing else than S&W test firing them at the factory before shipping.
As to shooting it, that is your decision. If it were mine, I would shoot it sparingly but I would definitely shoot it.

One of our esteemed Forum colleagues has detailed information on a simple fix to the cylinder stop (polishing the part that contacts the cylinder) to prevent the dreaded "drag line". However, every normally functioning S & W revolver has the line. If you intend never to fire or cycle the action ever it may be worth polishing the line out but I could not resist the temptation myself . Good luck in your decision and enjoy!

Thanks guys! The case cleaned up nice with furnature polish, the blue liner is original and no cracks, and with the tools and has manual. I have a less valuable 29-3 that I will use for shooting. This 29 will not be shot by me at least!I think it would bring 1500.00 on the right auction.JMO

I don't know how you store your firearms, but I would not store the 29-2 in its presentation case.

That's like a "buy one, get one free" kind of deal! You got 2 beauties for roughly around the price of 1 there. Great score!

I HAVE TO ROLL WITH Point 357 ON THIS. I SHARE HIS PERSPECTIVE. I STEER CLEAR OF UNSHOT COLLECTOR GUNS, WHEREIN SHOOTING THEM WILL DESTROY THEIR VALUE.......
I "COLLECT" CERTAIN GUNS THAT I HAVE AN AFFINITY FOR, (LIKE MOUNTAIN GUNS---I ONLY HAVE 3 IN VARIOUS CALIBERS, ALL PURCHASED USED) BUT I SHOOT EACH AND EVERY GUN THAT I OWN. NONE OF MY GUNS LOSE VALUE AS A RESULT OF MY JUDICIOUS USE, AND CARE........
I USUALLY HAVE A SPECIFIC PURPOSE IN MIND, WHEN I PURCHASE A GUN---SOME TYPE OF SHOOTING, WHETHER IT BE SD / HD, RANGE USE, HUNTING, OR PROTECTION WHILE WOODS WALKING OR ON CAMPING / FISHING TRIPS. NEVER HAS MY PURPOSE BEEN TO BUY A PERFECT GUN, STICK IT IN MY SAFE, AND SELL IT YEARS LATER AT A PROFIT. THAT'S JUST NOT MY STYLE.....
I WOULD DEFINITELY ENJOY SHOOTING AND MAINTAINING THAT BEAUTIFUL NICKEL MODEL 29. IMHO--LIFE IS TOO SHORT, NOT TO........
BELOW IS MY TINY 3 GUN "COLLECTION" OF MOUNTAIN GUNS---ALL GREAT SHOOTERS.....

The first M29 piqued my interest.
The 4" hurt my feelings.
The M19 really pissed me off.
Nice score!

Thank you!Yeah a pretty nice collection in one sweep!I can understand both sides on the" to shoot or not to shoot" debate.Myself I have plenty of shooters and bought them as such. But there is nothing wrong with buying guns to collect admire and for an investment.I do think we need to leave some of these guns to future generations in as good a cond. as possible, then they can make their own call wether to shoot or leave them to the next generation as received and so on.We are just care takers of these guns, they will have another owner, unless you plan on living forever and good luck with that one.

I AGREE THAT THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH BUYING GUNS "TO COLLECT, ADMIRE, AND AS AN INVESTMENT". THERE IS CERTAINLY A HUGE NUMBER OF FIREARMS ENTHUSIASTS, THAT DO JUST THAT. I AM JUST NOT ONE OF THEM. MYLIMITED FINANCIAL RESOURCES, AND LOVE OF ACTUALLY SHOOTING MY GUNS, PRECLUDES THAT APPROACH.......
I ALSO AGREE THAT WE ARE MERELY TEMPORARY CARETAKERS OF OUR FIREARMS. AS SUCH, WE BEAR SOME RESPONSIBILITY TO MAINTAIN THEM AS WELL AS WE CAN, SO THAT THEY MAY BE ENJOYED BY FUTURE GENERATIONS----NOT JUST USED UP, AND TURNED INTO JUNK ! ! !

Blue on the finish
A friend of mine just bought a nickel plated 29 8 3/8 but there are 2 spots that have a bluish mark. I have not seen the pistol yet--the seller said that the pistol was kept in a presentation case and that caused the marks. Is there anything that can be done to eliminate the blue? One spot is on the frame and the other on the cylinder. My friend said it looks pretty much unfired. It's also pinned and recessed.
Thanks

You can try Flitz or Simichrome on a soft cloth and see if the blue stain will come off the frame and cylinder. Neither will hurt nickel but possibly will remove the blue tint.
