Help me to date a 37 and a 19 ?
Hi there.
Could you help a frenchy, dating a S&W 37 and a 19 model please ?
My Chiefs Special model 37 (38 special caliber) is printed 51638 F3 under the yoke and under the grip AND J617848 at the bottom of the (square) butt (J frame).
The model 19-4 (357 magnum) is stamped 51K0673 under the yoke and at the bottom of the (square) butt (K frame).
And sorry if my english is not very american.

Welcome to the forum. The model 37 is from 1977 and the model 19 is from 1979. Enjoy they are both great guns. Your English was plenty "American" enough for me and the rest of us here. Not to many grammar or spelling purist here.
The onlt serial number that counts is the one on the bottom of grip frame. Some guns have a factory assy number for travking the fitted parts under yoke.

Thank you for answering that quickly and prescisely. Actually, I had trouble buying the Chiefs Special, because of the different numbers.
Great guns indeed. Except some shot failures in double action with SellierBellot amo.

Great guns indeed. Except some shot failures with the 37, in double action with SellierBellot amo. Too bad, the coiled spring can't be tightened.

Shot failures
Hello there. Months ago, I mentioned some shots failures with the little S&W37 and with SellierBellot amunition.
Just to share the end of the story :
leather dust (probably from the old holster) was stuck between the hammer and the frame. Out of sight of course.
After clean up, amo is acquited. And even if its name sounds like, it's not a french firm ;-).

I'm glad you found the problem with your model 37, Triv, and that it actually wasn't a gun or ammo problem but rather something interfering with the hammer. I hope you enjoy shooting those 2 fine revolvers you got and welcome you to post back here any time and enjoy the company of your fellow revolver enthusiasts here.
