Default Sacramento Sheriff's Dept. 15-3 - Grips Added

There's something about a neglected ex police firearm that does it for me. It started with 3rd gen autos, and now its creeping into my revolver binge. Some of you may remember the bargain model 10 I just picked up for just over 2 Benjamins. I thought it couldn't get any better until I saw this today in a pawn shop in a bad area of town near me. This model 15-3 was Sacramento marked with the quite the wrong grips. Price marked was $249. I offered $250 cash out the door and we shook hands.

Well, I checked the bore and mechanicals, nothing but blue skies. Pinned barrel. It had a finish issues, but nothing some CLP and bronze brush didn't work out. Grips, which seem factory but older, went into the grip bin and these went on after a very thorough cleaning and polishing. Hogues will go on for shooting. Here she is for right now, behold the $250 dollar Combat Masterpiece.

Great find. Good the pretty lady found a nice home where she can again be appreciated and send some lead down her barrel. Now if she could just talk and tell her stories.

God bless,

Some people have all the luck. That's an unbelievable price for one of the Sacramento Sheriff 15's. And at least from what it looks like in the pictures, you got a nice set of pre-war hard-rubber round butt stocks in the bargain, which by themselves might be worth quite a bit more than the common post-68 grips you put on it instead.

Yes, I was pleased to get a decent set of pre war k frame rubber boot grips with the deal. Looks like these would be somewhere in between 1899 and 1940 range. I'll probably sell them here on the forums to a good home with a pre war round butt to put them on. No clue what the value would be though.

If only it could tell some stories. I think I'll shoot both the 15 and the 10 tomorrow and give the ole girls a leg stretchin'. Ammo prices from SG have been good lately, I picked up a few cases of the LRN PPU ammo and it fires great in all of my 38/357s.

My other PD gun.

Great find! I'm just envious that seemingly everyone else on the forum finds these marvelous weapons for a better deal than I am capable of....lol.

Very nice indeed. She looks carried more than shot (as most law enforcement revolvers were). It is always good to see these hard workers given a good home where they can "relax" in peace.

Don't know about the States, but such markings would potentially increase the gun's value in the U.K.

It's the frequently debated issue about police markings:

Some people see the markings as a detraction from value.

But these don't show up very often, so if you find the right collector who wants one, yes they definitely will bring more. There is a small number of these out there which the sheriff's dept. still had in storage unissued and which they surplused stamped, but otherwise NIB complete with box and all papers and factory accessories; those are the most sought-after (although I'd prefer a used one with a history like the OP's).

PS: Found a picture of one of the mint specimen in an old thread. Just a thin turn line, likely post-sale by dept. Copyright member lowhog.

So there were a set of interesting plastic grips at a small gun store up north that caught my eye this weekend. They were in the back of the gun case in the original old worn box. The maker is "Rogers" and from my research, it looks like these were made by a grip maker who liked the Hogues but felt like they could be improved. These grips don't have the Rogers medallion or safariland emblem. The reason I bought them was because they seemed durable, looked good, and fit my hand perfect. I thought they would be an excellent addition to the Sacramento Sheriff's 15-3. I had never heard of them before and took a gamble at $20.

Yeah, those are early Rogers grips. They were pretty much a ripoff of the Hogues back when Hogue was only making expensive wood grips. I've got a pair of brown ones like yours a two pairs of black ones. They do feel just like Hogues and are very durable. Nice 15 by the way. I've got a 15-3 thats marked SCPD. One day I will get it lettered and figure out just who that is.

I had a pair of Rogers grips just like those on my first ever 66. They had a good feel.

Cool find, being an old cop, I like old cop guns. I believe it's actually a Combat Masterpiece, not a Target Masterpiece.

I have a set of those nearly identical in color on my 10-8. Mine is from Safariland. Apparently Safariland bought Rodgers out and produced his grips for a some time. Great feeling grips.

Default Is my Colt a genuine officer's gun...curious...

Now I'm starting to wonder if the Colt Officer Target .38 I recently purchased was a genuine police gun...all I know is it carries the six-pointed gold star on the right grip (in place of the Colt logo) that says "California Highway Patrol" with the golden state "Eureka" image on it. Could it be a fake? I've never seen a medallion like that before. Being a 1950's revolver, that might have been appropriate then. Just curious...
