unusual location of the serial number of my S&W 10-8?
Hello all, I have a S&W model 10-8, 4", 38sp, serial number ABN9314 but I wonder why the serial number is on the frame just above the cylinder. I think this is unusual, but maybe am I wrong. Is there anybody who has an idea? Thanks for your help.
Yes, it is unusual to have the SN stamped there; the typical position aside from the bottom of the grip frame and yoke cutout is just below the cylinder frame window and above the trigger on the left side.
It appears to be a very neatly done stamping, perhaps factory and for a specific contract requirement. Do you have any idea of its origin, perhaps to a French law enforcement agency?
Many thanks for the quick replys. Concerning the origin, I do not know the exact origin of this S&W 10-8 : This model was issued in many governmental law enforcement agencies but was also very popular for personal defence. Local Police ("Municipal" Police) and Wildlife Guards are still issuing S&W 10 or S&W 64, with a Lanyard Ring.
to Bob42: yes, the serial number is also on the butt.
