Picked these guys up today in a trade-update on chambers
1982 586 no dash # AAE13xx. Nothing special but pretty clean with minor wear to the edges.
Model 36-1 # 4620xx, 3" heavy barrel with original box and cleaning rod. Looks like it may have not been fired since leaving the factory. Matching number grips. Would like to find the paper work for the box.

I like em. You will enjoy shooting them both, especially that 586. Just curious, does the 586 have the M stamp? Enjoy.

Both are keepers! Don't know what you traded, but you got some good stuff on your end! I really like the 36-1 with that 3" barrel! Congratulations!

What is the "M" stamp?
Never mind, I looked it up. Neither this one nor my 6", 510 numbers away, are "M" stamped.

Well, I should have looked at the 586 a little closer; during my customary armorer level cleaning and tuning I found that the forcing cone looked like someone had taken a drill bit to it. Very coarse rotary gouges all around it. Fortunately I have the Brownells tools for cutting and polishing forcing cones so I lightly recut it and was able to smooth it out. Looks great and is within spec.
Home free or so I thought. As I was disassembling the cylinder I noticed each of the extractor "half moons" were all missing their bluing and looked to have been cut on. Then I looked into the chambers and to my horror found that each one looked like someone used a drill bit in them about 3/8" in from the rear. They were also gouged up. A few seconds with a bore brush wrapped in red Scotch Bright pad and some oil and I was able to smooth them out. The opening of each is now about .001" larger than my other 586. Not much and is probably within spec. I'll shoot it tomorrow and check the brass.
Fortunately I have the tools and skills to repair these things but boy is it irritating.

I traded a 1911 that needed a total restoration, and I mean total. Remove chrome, block sand, recut lettering, parkerize. I did 95% of the work myself and had only about $350 in the gun. So even if I have to replace the cylinder on the 586 I'm still way ahead.

So with the forcing cone was the bubba trying to get the lead out? With the chambers was he trying to chamfer them? He must have seen one of those informative u-tube videos on home gunsmithing with no talent or skills necessary. Good to hear you were able to smooth over the damage.

I don't know what the heck happened. Even though I cleaned up the forcing cone some of the rifling ahead of it is still a little rough but I don't think it will hurt anything except maybe be prone to collect lead. If that happens I may fire lap it.

Nice pair of revolvers. Hope you were able to salvage the 586.

Worst case I'll need to buy a new cylinder and/or extractor.

I fired one round out of my undamaged 586 as a control, then fired 6 rounds out of Bubba's gun. Near the case heads the 6 cases were expanded 1 to 1 1/2 thousandths more than the control round so I'm going to say it's good to go. Extraction was fine.
Any opinions?

That's not much. I guess what matters would be are the chambers within the SAAMI maximum-chamber dimension and does the gun function properly? If yes to both, I'd say goodie and not worry.

I don't have a gauge for .357. Extraction was fine. I talked with a buddy who is a very experienced gunsmith who said as long as there wasn't hard extraction it should be ok.

The simple assumption, and he's probably correct. On the other hand, a telescope gage doesn't cost much. You'll only need the smallest one, not the whole set, and a micrometer. Make several measurements around the area you polished. SAAMI dimensions should be on the web somewhere, or any of the companies who make chambering reamers should be able to give you the drawing or dimensions you need.

I looked up the dimensions. I have 5 .357's and they all vary a couple of thousandths. My tightest one is my 66-1 at .381", the loosest is my 19-4 at about .384" using my dial caliper right at the chamber mouths. The 19 is .001" over the damaged cylinder.
I'll have to play with it more; looking inside the chambers with a jeweler's loupe they're still pretty rough. If the extraction is ok with various types of .357 ammo I'll call it good.

Opinions about the 586?
I have several, and they are all good.
I am glad the 586 was able to be put right by you.
They are one of my favorite S&W Revolvers and not always easy to come by.
Enjoy shooting that one!

Very nice pair of revolvers. Hopefully they both shoot well enough to make you completely happy. For now, they both look very good.

586s are usually inherently accurate. I totally enjoy them. Sounds like you are mending the problems satisfactorily. I am a shooter but unfortunately not a fixer. Glad to hear you are both.
That 36-1 is a prize, they shoot so much better than the 2".
